Hogmanay generally isn't what it used to be. When we first moved into this house 20 years ago, all the neighbours came round first-footing. Now everyone shuts the storm door and turns out the lights at the front of the house so no-one rings the bell.
We still do it the way my grandparents did - OH goes out the back door after The Bells to let out the Old Year then rings the front door bell, coming in with his bag of coal, bread and a coin. We then head off to the usual gathering and get home at 0600....
That's what we use to do. Great tradition
