Hi all, I wondered if anyone would be able to help. We're wanting to visit my dad at Christmas and there is little room indoors for our family and three dogs so thought we would make the 600 mile drive from Suffolk to Tomintoul with the caravan, the issue is staying somewhere overnight on the way back down on boxing day.
Can anyone recommend a motorway service area where we can park overnight with the caravan around Penrith/Carlise on the A66/M6

Thanks but they're only open March to October. I can get an overnight stop on the way up at a caravan site, the real issue is boxing day night on the way back down.
Moss Thorn CL is open all year, easy to get to from the M6, has a loo and washbasin but no showers, is cheap and I don't think they will be bothered if you are not a club member. I wouldn't stop at a service station, expensive and noisy.

Tebay services, just below Penrith, is an excellent service area, with a good restaurant and a farm shop. It’s a bit pricey at £18 for 24 hours (includes £3 food voucher) with no hook-up or fresh water, but you would have access to good toilets and showers and it is (obviously) just off the motorway. That part of the M6 is pretty quiet so I shouldn’t think it would be particularly noisy. Not sure about southbound, but certainly the northbound side has a good dog-walk area. There used to be an actual caravan site there but it’s closed now.
Thanks for the replies, will ring the Teabay services tomorrow I think, looks ideal for a quick stop over and some rest. Only issue I could see is that there are only 13 hgv/caravan spots, looking at google maps, on the southbound and if they were full I would be stuck as the missus doesn't drive towing the caravan. Doubtful they would be full on boxing day I guess.
Doubt they would be full overnight - and if they were I'm sure there'd be room in the normal car park (I don't think there are any height/access issues, though it is a while since we were up there).

Tebay Southbound as you come in ignore the main lorry/bus park and take a left turn up a small hill and the there is another left turn into a rough gravel area for campers/caravans.
Plenty of greenery for dogs on your doorstep.

Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
what about penrith truck stop? heading south on the m6 you come off sign posted for a66 and on the roundabout take the first left and about 100yrds take the next left, and follow the road and its on the right, its massive! and then its dead easy getting back to the motorway
If you're stuck, try Dandy Dinmont, about 1.5miles off J44 at Carlisle. Friends have stayed, not m-way noise, very good facilities and dog walk on site.

Thanks for all the replies, decided to drive up without the caravan on this occasion due to leaving it so late to arrange, will be up in 5 months again with the caravan so have the details for then. Thanks all!
Thanks fickle. Just if anyone searches for the same thing, we stopped at the Gretna Services on the way up and they had a dedicated caravan area with easy access and large parking bay's. Though if the charge is the same as HGV's then over 2 hours is £26/£28!!
