Drumroamin, Dumfries and Galloway, across the estuary from Kirkcudbright is a clean, pleasant site with plenty of elbow-room, dark skies and - in May - a lovely bluebell wood a mile down the road. While staying there, I was charmed by Isle of Whithorn with its history and coastal location. Wigtown had a very good second-hand book shop, if I remember rightly. There's the Galloway Forest to explore. On the Rhinns of Galloway there is lovely scenery. Around Port Logan was used as a location for the tv series 'Two Thousand Acres of Sky' from the early 2000s. The area also has standing stones, cup and ring marks and so forth. It's all a bit off the beaten track, which is good.

Look up Thurstaston Country Park campsite Situated in the Wirral Peninsular Cheshire, at top of cliffs looking across the River Dee to Wales, with miles of ex train track walks/cycling both directions from the campsite, called 'The Wirral Way' and a walkway down to stony beach you can also walk both ways. Cafe outside site gates, restaurant a mile up the road pluss Organic farm shop/coffee .Its a club site , so reasonably good if tired facilities, but its more that its central for a big variety of places and attractions. You have the Roman city of Chester one way and Liverpool City (ferry trips, galleries, museums and architecture ) the other , and North Wales mountains less than an hour away. A mile up the road from site is Thurstaston Hill,(large heathland/woods/rocks etc), from where you can get a great view of Wirral and Wales and a few miles drive down the road one way is West Kirby marine lake from where if the tide is right you can park and walk out to Hilbre Island to do some seal and water bird spotting . A few miles the other direction is Parkgate an ex port which is now a tidal marsh( with an RSPB wetlands reserve a couple of miles further round the coast.) Inland a few miles is architecturally interesting Port Sunlight Village, built for workers of the Leverhulme soap factory ,with its art gallery and small museum and cafe , and a few mies further away, the disused but preserved Hooton rail station (on the Wirral Way) near which is a 2 floor second hand 'antique oddments' emporium called 'Browsers' if you like that sort of thing. Ellesmere Port Boat museum not far way ,likewise Chester Zoo   and several other country parks to visit.

We were at Wirral Country Park in the summer. We had a lovely shady pitch( temperature high twenties), so relaxing. We visited Liverpool via the ‘Ferry ’cross the Mersey’, PortSunlight, Parkgate, New Brighton and then cycled on the old railway track.
Can’t wait to go back.

My apologies, SamandRose, in replying to Speaker12, I missed your post. If you come to Mull post on here and will try and answer any questions.

If you decide on D&G, I can also recommend Drumroamin - the owners are so helpful. It doesn't have direct beach access but under 30 minutes will take you to some great walks and bike rides.

I also love the far north-west - the scenery is stunning and very different from Mull, Glencoe, the Mamores and Nevis range and Red and Black Cuillin.

I'm Wirral-based and agree with the above - plenty of places to visit! Lovely coastal scenery too. I've often walked past the Thurstaston site on my way down to the beach and thought what a smashing spot it is to visit.

Another highlight is - given good weather and the right tidal conditions! - the walk out to Hilbre Island from the West Kirby slipway at the seaward end of the Marine Lake, which is the only safe route. It's a fair plod, but gives you a completely different perspective on the area. Notice board by the slipway has all the info you need. Take food and water, wear suitable outdoor gear and boots/wellies due to rough rocks on the islets.

Isn't Thurstaston a Caravan Club site, do you need to be a member?

It is a camc site but they accept non members but I bet it’s pricey. This is one of our favourite sites, we never seem able to get a pitch these days as I can’t book very far in advance due to shifts.

Have you looked at the Tranquil Parks website? They have some lovely sites all over the country, adult only and with good standard facilities.
