Hello

We’re looking for a lively campsite with tent pitches, preferably in cumbria/ north England. Doesn’t need to have a bar/ entertainment but somewhere in the countryside that doesn’t have a noise down/ lights out by a certain time policy. We love the countryside but like to relax and socialise of an evening without disturbing others.

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure, but an 11pm noise curfew seems to be fairly standard across most sites. It certainly is with Camping and Caravan Club sites, but this may not be so with all private sites.

The thing is that site operators have to try and cater for everyone. Many older people and people with young children wouldn't appreciate a lot of noise after 11pm, and may well complain, hence the curfew. Tents particularly aren't exactly soundproof.

An adults only site would probably suit, and if you are members of the Caravanning and Camping Club then try a Certified Site ( CS). In your chosen area, apply the filters for the facilities you need.

Don't think a Camping and Caravanning CS would be suitable, as most of the ones we have been to are small quiet sites on a small piece of land just big enough for the 5 vans and maybe a couple of tents, putting up a tent with people who want to stay up most of the night will be a recipe for disaster, thing is not everybody wants to be up most of the night after a day of exercise and fresh air,it is surprising how noisy it can be when everything around is so quiet.

No maybe not, but the OP sys they don't want a bar etc, so not easy to know what to suggest. I know a site that may suit, but it's near Brecon. Or if they are a group (again not easy to find a site that will accept one), perhaps they could hire the whole site?

Just thought of somewhere, Hexham Racecourse, the tents are in a separate area from the caravans, which is not to say that there won't be families with children in tents.

Often people who seek out adults only sites do so because they want peace and quiet, not because they want to be up all night. I think it's a rule on all C&CC sites, including Cs sites, that there must be no noise after 11pm. We have certainly found it to be so.

I would have thought that the ones with no such rule would be the big sites with all facilities, a bar, entertainment, pool, etc. Not the small sites.

Welcome to UKCS, Butterworth19.
It was 10 years ago, but the Steward at Gibralter Farm site (Silverdale, near Carnforth) & his mates were in the caravan awning loudly partying until the wee small hours when we were there. No guarantee it's the same now though as most sites have a "settle down" time.
Maybe you should find a hidden spot out of sight for some "responsible" wild camping.

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. Our booking would be a group made up two or three couples in their thirties. We’re not after a hectic, late night, just somewhere we can enjoy a few drinks outside the tent of a night without worrying about disturbing other campers as the time passes 11pm. Definitely not staying up all night with very loud music but as a couple of people have suggested, sound travels a long way in the quiet surroundings of most campsites. We’ll have a look at the above suggestions. Thanks again.

Then maybe join the C&CC and hire a whole CS?

Just thought of somewhere else, Stonebridge Fishing Lakes near Northallerton. Not sure if they accept tents, but they do have loos and showers, and an old hippy sort of owner (or used to be). A small site possibly open to exclusive hire?

Trouble is a few drinks outside means the voices and laughter get louder the later it gets. In summer, even in a caravan it's nice to have windows open.

We hate being anywhere near that as it's impossible to sleep. Most site owners will be sending you on your way next morning.

Perhaps you'd be better off in a night club somewhere.

When we were young and pre-children, 11pm was when the evening was just getting started. Then along came the kids and 11pm suddenly became "very late at night!" Now the kids have grown and we are retired, most nights we are in bed before 11, except when we decide to have a night out.

It's all relative. To some 11pm is still early, but to others it's late. I'm just glad I'm not a campsite owner, as it must be impossible to please everyone.

Best Regards,
Colin

I was once pitched next to a group who played a drinking game: down-in-one every time someone told them to shut up. Rather sweet really - they were complete lightweights and it was all over well before 1am.

Not being a fan of “rulesy” sites I’m prepared to accept some night time noise, but agree it can be a PITA. Short season sites, which are only open for a month or two in the summer might be the best bet for the OP as they can be quite anarchic. The only time I’ve been really riled by late night noise was at one of those. We were treated to a loud argument amongst a group of racists on a weekend jolly.

I don't mind a bit of noise up until midnight-ish from the neighbours, if it's just chatter and giggles.
If its whooping and/or music, or if it goes on until the wee hours, I usually let them know my feelings... in fact I make a point of going round to discuss it politely but face to face... when I get up at 05:45... whilst I'm waiting for my kettle to whistle!

I'm not sure what you mean by 'not disturbing others' just because there is no rule to be quiet?
You're still going to disturb others.

Common courtesy surely dictates that you keep the noise down after 11pm?

I live in Cumbria and most sites that I have camped at have a quiet time policy. I think that most families with children are spending holidays in the UK more and camping can be the least expensive fun break for the family. I welcome a 10/11pm quiet time but I do enjoy a good laugh and a few beers on site.

Look at mains farm in kirkoswald Penrith. I know they do a music festival around July which would be a non quiet event into the night. We stayed last October, lovely site great owners.

Another would be meadow falls in ingleton about 30 mins drive from Kendal. Superb little site but they have a 10pm kids stop playing and running about and a 11pm quiet time. We stayed last August and had friends with us. Sat round a campfire till early hours having a few drinks but not making too much noise.
About a 2 minute walk out of site is a lovely pub with plenty of outside seating areas which you could use to have a few beers and a laugh till 11pm without upsetting fellow campers.
