Hi All

This may be a question that has been asked on numerous occasions but sorry got to ask. We are travelling down to Cornwall over the Whit holiday from Leicester.Looking at driving down late evening and hopefully find somewhere to park up for the night. Not thinking of a site but maybe Services or a large layby. Any experiences or advice would be gratefully received.

There are plenty of big layby’s on the A30 from Exeter, or if you are going via the A38, you could try Lemonford Camp site.

Good luck

Motorway Services often charge the same as a campsite.

Not cheap, but I've used Gloucester Services for an overnight stop - clean, spacious, area reserved for cars and caravans. Price includes breakfast voucher, and there are spotless loos and showers too. https://www.gloucesterservices.com/need-to-know/parking

Hortham Farm CL near Bristol, but you do need to be a member of the Caravan and Motorhome Club, cheaper and quieter than a service area. Or Withy Water, near Burnham on Sea.

oh you don't want a lay-by, surely. Noisy, buffeted by passing lorries all night, potentially the target of anyone coming home from a night out who fancies hammering the sides of the van for fun or trying the doors, never mind the safety issue of someone coming off the road for an emergency and slamming into the back of you.
A small site will be part of your holiday, and need not be expensive.

Sourton Down is a very big parking area near services on the A30. Quiet and off the main road, and you can stay overnight for free. Clean public loos and a decent cafe for brekkie!

Technically (in England & Wales, different laws in Scotland) I believe it's illegal to 'camp' in a layby as it's considered part of the highway where 'camping' is prohibited. The powers that be firstly have to catch you, then be bothered to do something about it, but you may find your overnight stop disturbed and be forced to move on.

A layby on a major road is not a pleasant place for a number of reasons, even worse than most services. For something like only £10 or £12, I'd be very inclined to seek out a CL type site, most of them are lovely, make it part of your holiday and arrive at your main site fresh and ready to enjoy yourself.

I do sympathise with you, I think many of us who do long distances have the same problem, really is a case of the law being an Ass, you are required not to drive when tired or for excessive hours, yet prevented from stopping for any reasonable rest period in anything but a services or camp site simply because of the outfit you drive!

In reply to the last post - there are signs in thge Sourton service area saying that overnight stops are permitted, and it's quite safe too....just a big car park really.

You won't be disappointed by Withy Water, but book in advance, it's popular and they lock the gate at 9pm.
