Hi

Planning on taking our daughter to Chester Zoo for her 18th birthday as a surprise - I know not the sort of surprise most 18 year olds want but you haven;t me this one.

Looking for a site to stay 24/08 - 31/08 Max 1.5hours drive away, never been to this area so have no idea where to even start looking.

we've got a 8m twin axle caravan, like to walk, cycle and visit towns and bars.

Any help will be a good start, tried Callows top but its full.

There are plenty of sites near Chester Zoo on the search.

I haven't stayed at any as I'm local to Chester, but there are 2 C&MC sites at Wirral country park and Cheshire Fair Oaks and a CCC site at Delamere. I think you can get slightly cheaper tickets if you buy from Tourist info at Cheshire Oaks outlet village.

Hi Bertie can recommend Cheshire fair oaks cc site its local to lots of things,a couple mins drive to Chester zoo next door to the zoo is the park and ride to Chester town centre,a 10mins walk takes you to the Cheshire oaks designer outlet,where there's shops,pubs,cinimia,blue planet aquarium,also you can catch a bus to Liverpool

I stayed at Birch Bank Farm site a couple of years ago - very basic facilities, but as you're in a caravan that's not quite so much of an issue. Good level site, open aspect over fields. Not far out of Chester, canal walks available.

Thanks for the replies, yes I have done the search, problem is what area to go?

We don't mind driving to the zoo, but not coming from that area wondering if we would be better going a bit further afield and then into which direction.

We have about a 300 mile drive from home so wan tto make the most of the area but have no idea which area is best to make the most of, we don't necessarily need the coast as we live on the coast so beaches are readily available.

If you use the search facility on here, and use Method 3, (map search), you can choose your sites, and what you need on the site.

To the the East of Chester is handy for visiting Liverpool and/or Manchester, or The Lake District and Peak District.

To the west of Chester is handy for North Wales.

You will need two days at the zoo lol, I fully understand why that's a good birthday present, I like seeing different zoo's and parks, and I live and work in one.

Chester Zoo is really rather special. My daughter was married there, in the old Victorian Gothic house in the grounds - it was a lovely event. Guests were wandering out of the evening reception to admire the adjacent lions - which was a bit different! Hope you find somewhere to stay. Around Shrewsbury/Oswestry there are some good places which are not too far from Chester as a base; the British Ironwork Centre outside Oswestry is well worth a visit - it certainly has the wow factor. Animal-lovers will enjoy the many sculptures of assorted wildlife. Not to mention the giant spider...

Check out Wirral Country Park CMC Site. Great cycling and walking along the Wirral way direct from site and about 40mins drive from Chester Zoo.

Pen y Bont on the outskirts of Bala in North Wales is an easy 1 hour drive from Chester Zoo. Excellent walking and cycling direct from the site and within the Snowdonia National Park. All the amenities you need a are 10 minute walk away. The site has easy access and large pitches for your twin axle. Great reviews on this site.

Thornleigh Park Farm, very near Chester is good, but as said, there are loads of sites, depends what you want. Lady Heyes at Frodsham gets good reviews also, not been there.

Well, what do you know....!!!!

In 48hrs... (Saturday), we're off to Blakemere Touring Park, near Chester for the first time EVER, and this thread is certainly helping us decide what to do...!



TWO DAYS to get round the zoo though!? I'm guessing we'll be coming back for our summer holiday down there too - and also to do the other things in the area(s)...!
