I've noticed a good few sites seem to be using a gravel base for tent pitches - especially the pitches for larger tents.
Not sure I like the idea of that. Surely it must be hard on the groundsheet/footprint as opposed to grass. I wouldn't have thought they would be very comfortable under foot either.
If you've stayed on a gravel pitch, what were your thoughts please?

Thanks.

I have never camped on gravel pitches but I have been on gravel pitches when I had a caravan.

If they are shingle or grit, the shingle/grit gets stuck in soles and walked everywhere. Shingle also contains very sharp bits.

Large round stones are better but not very comfortable.

I would never put my expensive tent on anything other than grass even with a footprint, and I have been known to turn down pitches which are too worn and consist of a mud patch and tree roots.

Many campsite owners don't actually understand much about camping, particularly tents. They are farmers/landowners trying to draw in some cash with as little ongoing maintenance as possible, hence the so-called all weather pitches.
