I do agree that ‘rogue ‘ camping or MH parking must be a huge issue for locals, the authorities and other users in many beauty spots. My family live close to heathland that is a SSSI (site is special
Scientific interest) and there are often MHs parked overnight, despite the signs saying it is not allowed.
But here there was no sign.

There probably will be soon. It sounds as if someone from the community is gathering evidence. I was under the impression that overnighting in Glencoe was prohibited anyway.

Slightly off subject I know but it does always amaze me that people pay 10s of thousands of pounds for their motor home and then want to spend their holidays in a car park or an aire.

There are campsites in the area. Use them or lose them.

Sounds like campervan victimisation. If a car or a van parked on the layby and the occupants got their heads down for the night nobody would bat an eyelid...but if it happens to be a van with windows and a proper bed, they are banned.
You don't know that Bob.
From experience the local Police do check on cars left overnight as it may be a walker late or missing. If you are sleeping in your car in an area you shouldn't be according to the access code you will be asked to move on. That saying, it is not illegal to sleep in your car, but it may be against byelaws to have your car there and be sleeping in it...

Thank you, Ewen. I think we all appreciate that, if you're not familiar with an area, it's very hard to understand the local situation.
Bob, Glencoe is a walkers'/climbers' magnet and it's almost a matter of course that locals keep an eye out for vehicles remaining late at night or still there the next morning for the very simple reason Ewen describes. We do the same on Mull. Most of the time, thankfully, there's no cause for alarm, but it won't be the first or the last time that a concerned local has called and a life has been saved. What would you rather happen?
I still suspect that the OP may have been inadvertently caught up in a local campaign to monitor campervan/motorhome usage.

I thought the car park mentioned was just that...a free car park...and in an area where people go camping/climbing/hiking/fishing etc; one might expect to see vehicles parked up in car parks overnight unless overnight parking is banned. I would start to be curious if it remained there the following day with no sign of life, although if somebody has gone off on a camping hike, it could well be there a couple of days or more...unless a time period for parking is stipulated.
If you leave your car to go hillwalking or camping you are supposed to leave a note on your dash with your route eta etc. The police do check any cars left overnight and will call out MR if they think there is reason to do so. That car park is used by MR on call outs as well. It is all normal procedure in the walking/climbing areas.

Does that apply to campervans as well?
Yes. Do you think campervanners don't go up the hills?
They might even knock....though I would think if you have a blackout on the windscreen etc they may leave you in peace if you are lucky.
Best usage is to use local facilities if they are available. There are at least 4 official campervan areas so why wild camp? When I am with my tent I dont wild camp if there is a campsite available.
Enjoy the area and invest in it. Too many load up with food from home, park up and don't spend any money in the area. Remember it is locals paying for those public toilets etc.
