I haven't tried camping or caravanning on the European mainland so I don't know what their pricing system is like, but this is rip-off Britain after all.
I think most sites here charge for a couple as the majority of campers/caravanners do come in couples or families. Single campers must be only a tiny minority. When we first started camping back in the 1970s, most sites charged for a pitch regardless of how many people. You could have as many people on your pitch as your camping unit would allow. These days most sites charge extra for any more than two, but I suppose that their attitude is that one person occupying a pitch is taking up as much space as a family of six would, so their minimum price is for two. If you hired a car that could seat 4 you would pay the same price if you were the only occupant as you would if all the seats were occupied. All depends on your point of view I suppose.
