The farm where we store our motorhome have said we can have a pitch on one of their hookups if we want - too close for me, I got walking across the farm most day as it's on the edge of our village! Our first campsite outing will be to a farm site just outside the next village, no facilities just a great view. It's ideal for getting to know a new motorhome and an opportunity to get away with some friends who have a very demanding business and find it hard to take a break, but wouldn't be my choice otherwise. How far from home do you have to be for it to feel like a break?

For an overnighter 6 miles is the closest so far.

When we bought a caravan after not having one for many years we tried it out going to Hertford C&CC site which is about 10 minutes drive for us. We have since been there a few times for local DA events. It's such a nice site I sometimes wish it was further away because we would go there more often.

It is still a break going there though, as it's a different outlook, and if you forget where you actually are you could be anywhere. Only slight snag is that when we shop from there we go to the same shops we would go to from home. On that very first visit though with a new (to us) caravan, it was very handy for nipping home to get the things we had forgotten to bring.

Colin

About 6 miles down the road from home.

I camped there twice in the winter months so that I could pop home with ease if the weather turned foul.

Good job too as my double airbed developed a leak mid trip one Christmas, and I was able to pop back home to get the spare single airbed out to continue with the trip. That was the last time I used an airbed in Dec 2011.

Quite happy to camp near home - anywhere would be a nice change of scenery.

No sites close by, we have been to Welwyn for a wedding. The nearest one with any appeal is at Stevington, near the Ouse west of Bedford, about 20 miles away.

Last year I pitched my van on the site it's stored at, as a friend wanted to break his journey back to Devon and it would have cost him £100/day (£200 for overnight stay!) to bring his Landrover to my house due to London Vehicle Emission Zoning. Only £14 for the pitch!

It's only 20 miles from home, but it felt like a mini holiday, we walked into town for a few beers, brought a takeaway back with us, and had a great time.

Different atmosphere, different view, different accommodation (to home) so it counts as a break.

Don't think my X Trail is allowed into London these days either, as it's only Euro 4. Never drive there anyway.

When we were both working we regularly went fairly local for spring bank or whit bank holidays.
I could take the van over after work in the week and set it up then it was a quick trip avoiding traffic for BH.

We used to use High Onn CMC site as its really peaceful and has no toilet block so rarely full.
Ebury Hill C&CC is similar although a bit more popular.
Both around 20 miles.
Now retired simply avoid peak time.
In fact if damn Covid had not happened we would be in France now!

I don't like camping in the same County I live because I have been to most places many times before and it doesn't seem like I am 'away'. However, I did once stay a night on a campsite about 10 miles from home because I had bought a new tent and wanted to check it over and try it out before the winter hit hard.

As it happened, it turned out to be a really nasty, cold and sleety November night but it was a pub campsite so after a few beers it didn't matter - lol. It was my first tent with a sewn in groundsheet and I also had an electric heater so it was luxury compared to my previous draughty and damp tents, despite the weather.

We are staying in our own county, going about 34 miles. We can fish in the canal and go for walks and hopefully it won't be too crowded.

Closest to home I've ever camped is about half an hour's drive away, outside Chester, at Birch Bank Farm for a couple of nights. Any closer than that and my comfy bed at home would be calling to me - especially if it rained!

we regularly went further to collect the caravan and then half way back home to get to the site, the caravan was 10 mins from our house! I would put tea in the oven and then jump in the car, go home get a shower, drive back and tea would be cooked!
