That’s such a pity about Arisaig / Morar - especially because it has a number of sites listed here on UKCS & each site is someone’s favourite. (Don’t know if they’re all open though.) There’s something magical about those views over to the islands of an evening. Glen Etive has been having problems for several years now, I think.

Totally agree Fiona - it's absolutely gorgeous there so I can see why folks want to go but heaving crowds are not my thing at all! Fortunately, ferries permitting, it only takes me a couple of hours to get up there so a long day trip later on will have to suffice. I think one of the sites wasn't going to open but can't remember which, sorry.

Etive, you're right, but even people in the tourism business are saying this year is really bad. So sad.

Uproar in Glen Nevis, today, as they started towing cars before lunchtime. You couldn't get an ambulance through.

The village of Durness on the NC500 is “swamped”, according to BBC news app. Dozens of tents (50 or so) in the dunes & machair outside the campsite, cars parked in passing places, people leaving broken bottles & human waste behind, “wet wipes blowing in the wind”. Grim.

It’s heartbreaking! Every weekend trying to get to our local shop is crazy. Cars aren’t even parking on verges, just dumped on road, in passing places etc. It’s never been so bad. And the abuse!!!! Unacceptable! No social distancing at all in the shop for example, and the staff are subject to verbal abuse at times. The road is our only emergency access serving Lochside communities. A fire engine would struggle to pass in places.

No one minds folk coming to camp, but what’s happen8ng now is just on a whole other level!
They are building fires from the small trees they are cutting down on the Lochside and surrounding forest, there is no respect for locals, fellow campers or the environment. As already mentioned, human waste and chemical toilets being emptied into loch.

There just isn’t the resources to police it. When the police do come, and I’m sure it is reluctantly as it takes them so long to get here and then return to either perth or pitlochry........I worry things will come to a head at some point, tempers are fraying!

It’s also a very busy road with cyclists, and I’ve scarily passed young families on bikes with absolutely no clue the danger they are in and hazards they are causing. Horrified to see 2 parents, one with baby strapped to front and what looked like a a 4 year old (or thereabouts) on a tiny wee bike in between the adults swaying all over the road thinking it was ok to cross to the other side to use the passing places!

Apologies I’m ranting now! But it is a worry...... and those dirty campers will ruin it for everyone else eventually.

We are on a lovely site outside Nairn.
It is called Barns Highland Campsite and is listed via the search facility on here.
I have posted my first campsite review and I thoroughly recommend it.
Every aspect of the site described in the website is accurate.
Very peaceful.

Information for anyone in the Glencoe area:

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, are proposing to carry out series of carriageway resurfacing projects on the A82 Trunk Road.
A82 Pass of Glencoe, Sun 16th Aug to Mon 17th Aug (2 nights) 8pm - 5am - Road closure with amnesty.
A82 South of Ski Centre, Tue 18th Aug to Thur 20th Aug (3 nights), 8pm – 5am - Road closure with amnesty.
A82 Ski Centre Jct, Mon 31st Aug to Thur 3rd Sept (4 days), 7am – 5pm - Dayshift convoy.
Amnesties will be at 9pm, 10pm, 12pm, 2am and 4am.

Also, GLENCOE MOUNTAIN RESORT has made the following announcement:
Please note that with immediate affect only tents and campervans pre-booked into our camp site will be allowed to stay overnight.

We had to make the difficult decision when we re-opened to only have 50% of our own lodges and camping available to ensure toilets and showers could cope with demand and social distancing could be easily maintained.

Having an unlimited number of wild campers and campervans turning up to the large ski centre car park each night that aren't always using our contact tracing app but are using our facilities makes no sense and risks the safety of our guests and future of the whole site.

We have consistently asked campervans not booked with us to stay away from the site during the coronavirus crises, or at a minimum be completely self contained and avoid using our facilities. Unfortunately that hasn't happened.

Never heard of an amnesty for road work - I take it that’s a short slot when you can drive through while the crews have their comfort break, but you’ll have waited maybe 2 hours?
Not surprised about the Glencoe Resort statement but it’s going to be difficult to police unless the Police do it. Wonder what the Aviemore ski resort car park is like? they had to close it off during lockdown and Glenmore campsite is closed.

Sorry, Fiona, we're so used to the amnesty situation up here, didn't think that other folks wouldn't be familiar with the term - my bad! Yep, the amnesty is a short break to allow traffic through - quite a lot of commercial plus shift workers overnight plus people travelling for ferries, etc. but yes, if you're unlucky in your timing, you will wait two hours and maybe a bit longer if they're a wee bit behind with that section. It usually involves some kind of convoy as well, so it depends which end they start from!

It's a bit like the current situation regarding the Rest and Be Thankful with them using the Old Military Road alternative with 1 hour each way rotating - nightmare if you miss it!

Not been up to Glencoe for ages but if I remember correctly, they do have gates because the resort has been closed when overloaded in the past. I'd imagine that the Cairngorm car park could be closed overnight with the snow gates?

An update - this time for those using the A83 to Oban, Lochgilphead and down to Kintyre!

The Old Military Road - the "bypass" - for the Rest and Be Thankful is currently open 24 hours with a convoy system. But, it may well close at night if heavy rain forecast so keep checking Traffic Scotland or the BEAR website if the weather doesn't look great. If the OMR is closed then you have a 55 mile detour.

Also be aware that, if travelling into the evening, you have enough fuel on board - there's been one or two people caught out because they've missed the last convoy/OMR closed early because of risk. There's 24 hour fuel (card) in Luss, Arrochar (if stuck on A83 heading to Inverary) and Lix Toll on the detour route. Green Welly is, I'm told, not 24. How long is this going on? Well, we're told at least three weeks!! If you're using the Rest/Inverary/Dalmally route to Oban and especially if heading for a ferry, make sure you build in extra time!

I've had a few days in Galloway. No problems at all. The site has restricted the available pitches to avoid toilet block queues. Facilities regularly cleaned. Hand sanitiser available. All campers keeping a distance. Local places not busy at all. Definitely no "Magaluf".

Apologies if this is boring for some, but posting for anyone touring in Argyll. The problems with the Rest and Be Thankful (A83) are going to go on for some time and the Old Military Road (the diversion) is not always going to be open if, like at the time of writing, severe rain is forecast. Rather than take the 55 miles detour, you may want to consider using Western Ferries.

Buying online or on the boat is not cheap so below is a link to places where you can get cheaper tickets:

Same in Dumfriesshire. Site half empty midweek. Mind you, it’s blowing a hoolie off the Solway so Magaluf Man would be having trouble with the BBQ.
