After 4 years of touring we're looking for a seasonal pitch for next year. The thing I'm coming up against is that some sites won't accept older vans. Ours is a 2004, perfect for what we need and perfectly maintained inside and out but I've had a point blank NO from some places.
Anyone know why this is? I did wonder if it was some kind of insurance/risk issue, or is it just purely down to aesthetics and "keeping the riff raff out"
Any thoughts or direct experiences?

Only really heard of this before with statics. Worth my bearing it in mind though if I ever feel the need for a more permanent site. I may have problems too, as my van is a 1992 model. To us, 2004 is "modern".

i think possibly they are getting confussed with the static caravan "thing" of nothing over a certain age (10 yrs old seems to be the norm) are you sure you have used to correct wording when asking? your looking for a seasonal pitch for a tourer caravan, not a static caravan pitch.

our caravan is a 2006 and no way do we consider it old!

I shared an older van on a seasonal pitch (with winter storage) for a couple of years without any problems, but that was near Bala in N. Wales so probably too far away from you. The site was on a working farm - just a nice flat field, no fancy hard standings, but plenty of elbow room - so maybe look for more 'basic' sites that don't have posh aspirations? They might be more flexible.

Marg, I don't really consider ours old either. But it's definitely not statics, one site in North Yorkshire clearly states they won't accept tourers pre 2007 on seasonal pitches when I tried to apply. Another told me directly they don't take tourers over 15 years old.
Its a real shame if its a snobbery thing as I don't believe the age of the van reflects the caravanner at all. Plus, there are some fabulous vintage vans out there.
Maybe I'll just have to shrug and say "It's their loss". It does annoy me though...

Riverside Meadows near Ripon and Flower of May. And another near Whitby that I'm having a discussion with.
From comments on other forums this seems to be becoming more common, especially on larger sites. North Wales seems to have quite a few.

Have you tried Lound House Farm near Whitby? It says on the site info that seasonal pitches are available. There are no showers on site, just toilets, but judging from the reviews they've updated them since I was there; I remember them being rather spidery. Might be worth a look. https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=6280
