I’m looking at St Ives and have seen Polmanter and Ayr. I’ve never been to the area before and would like close to st Ives and preferably pitches with views. Can anyone offer any advice on either of these please? Or anything around that area in Cornwall but we like walking distance to town, preferably coastal. Thankyou. We have no children or dogs and do like a site with a little something going on

The Site Search has about a dozen sites within 5 miles of St Ives but you don’t say if you need EHU or toilets etc, which would reduce the choice. If you tick on “campsite with pub” that would narrow down the search too, but I’ve always found reading the recent reviews is helpful. What suits us might not suit you & vice versa. Good luck !

Well I think I’ve narrowed it down to the 2 I stated. I would just like to know views on those who have been regarding proximity to beach, town etc. We do use the facilities and we prefer premium pitches. Thankyou

We have stayed at Polmanter - August 2017 it is a nice site. Toilet block is modern and clean. Nice bar with outside seating area overlooking outdoor pool. It is not within walking distance of St Ives they run an hourly i think shuttle bus into the town centre. However I don’t know if this will still happen under existing circumstances. No sea views from the site and it is a little remote. We stayed in August weather wasn’t the best and you got a sea mist every morning which we felt spoiled breakfast as made it look damp and gloomy. Site was very busy but it was school holidays. The site itself is lovely but not for us not worth the drive from Cumbria. The drive was horrendous one road in and one out we set off to come home at 8am and took us 7 hours to get to our Tewkesbury Gloucestershire stop over - never again!!
Good luck with your search.

Hi, If you have narrowed it to those two I would say that it really depends on your expectations.
Would say straight off that both sites are very popular with the school holiday period often fully booked, and that's in 'normal' times so you do need to get a booking made ASAP if you are set on going and even more so if that will be in the traditional holiday periods

We have stayed at both over the years and at Polmanter for two weeks, three years running, to be with our daughter and family and if facilities are what you need that's the one. Its a superbly kept site with a number of very clean toilet blocks, pool, bar/restaurant etc but the entertainment, centered on the children, may not be of interest to you.

There are distant sea views from from Polmanter, and walking into town is not only possible but enjoyable on well publicised road/path.

But if being able to walk into town regularly, wont go into what is local!, then Ayr Field, with its fantastic views over Porthmeor Beach, is the one.

Not sure about the reference to a single way in as that can only be the driveway, there is certainly no sea mist 'every morning' and yes, it is a long way from Cumbria!

In fairness I have to mention that, as we all know the weather can be variable and we have had one August stay of 14 days, we actually cut is short by a day, where we had rain on every day, sometimes just a short shower but still it was every day.

That was the final straw and, much as our daughter loved to be back home in Cornwall, the following year we had two weeks of unbroken sun in France.

One factor that can be more of an issue than people may imagine is parking in St Ives and while the bus from the site is a bonus it can be very busy and last summer, with social distancing, proved to be of little use unless you were prepared to spend a long time waiting at both ends of the journey.
There are ways to avoid this, and for us, as a group of 8 in total, a mini bus taxi was cheaper than the bus, but Ayr Field would remove the issue totally.

St Ives is our favourite place in Cornwall and attracts lots of visitors so, as I mentioned, your expectations will need considering, especially as walking through the town during the day it is near impossible to socially distance.

Whichever you choose hope that you have a great holiday.

Hi, Out of interest had a quick look at Polmanter as we know from staying there that you needed to book for the following year as you left to be sure to get a pitch and this is the result;

If you are seeing this message, it is likely that we are full for the dates that you are searching for.

We are now fully booked from Saturday 24th July – Saturday 28th August 2021. Any cancellations will be posted on our website: www.polmanter.com/availability

Hi sorry I meant the drive down from the M5 to St Ives only 1 A road in and out so was rammed with traffic. We should have known but had never been before and this caught us out and kind of spoiled things for us. Just our experience and sharing as it helps people form their own opinion. I want to say Polmanter is a lovely site. We were unlucky with the weather but we did wake up to sea mist every morning again just unfortunate. I am pleased you have got sorted.
