Hello all,

We are weighing up doing a tour of North Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland this summer in our VW camper.

Its not chartered territory for us southerners so looking for some tips on dog friendly campsites in the region.

Any itinerary tips greatly appreciated also.

Both are big counties with lots of sites, so it really depends on your needs and preferences. Coast or country? Town or rural? What if any on-site facilities do you need?

However, a couple of possible starters for 10 are:

Possibly our favourite site in Yorkshire is Pear Tree Farm (aka Harton Caravans). It's a rural working farm about 9 miles from York and an hour's drive or so from the coast at Scarborough and Whitby. Think you need to be Camping and Caravanning Club members. https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=12852

For Northumberland, have a look at Springhill Farm, which is a larger site but has a dedicated dog walking area. Some of the pitches have lovely views of the beach and Bamburgh Castle. https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=5974

Whitby is a must-visit (and if you can travel there on the North Yorkshire Moors railway from Pickering, so much the better. £££ though.) Castle Howard is impressive and York is delightful. Northumberland has more castles than any other county in England. Alnwick (used as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films) is a particular highlight - you need 2 days to really do the castle and gardens justice. A boat trip to see the seals and puffins on the Farne Islands is another must do (scuba diving with them is even better, but admittedly more of a niche market)!

Yorkshire we use the C&CC site Scarborough Cross the road from site and down public footpath and nice clff top walk.

I found Serenity at Hinderwell very comfortable - spotless facilities, chippie down the road. Noisy neighbours were told to shush when they carried on past the 'be quiet' deadline which, as I was in a tent, I appreciated. I wouldn't say it was a particularly scenic location, but it was pleasant, convenient and well run. I'd stay there again if I visited the area.

A vote for Serenity from me too.
Butchers, Chippy and Pub 5 mins walk. Staithes and Runswick Bay, proper old unspoilt fishing villages 5/10 min drive, walkable too.
Whitby just a few mins away too.
Thornton Le Dale, home of TV program Bangers and Cash, worth a visit too.
Both Clubs have sites close to Barnard Castle.

North Yorkshire is big - what do you like doing?

Historic buildings? There's the already mentioned Castle Howard plus castles galore Helmsley, Richmond, Scarborough. Loads of Abbeys, Kirkham Priory, Fountains Abbey, Rievaulx, Jervaulx, Byland.

Countryside - Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Malham Cove, Aysgarth Falls, Goathland. Beautiful villages such as Hovingham, Coxwold, Hutton-le-Hole, Dalby Forest, White Horse (Kilburn)

Museums - Elvington air museum, Eden Park, Railway Museum York (is a must)

You have lots to choose from.

Bellingham is a nice small town with some pleasant walks. It has two sites - a C&CC site and Demesne farm. This is a fairly basic, but good, site on a working farm. Both are a few minutes walk from shops, pubs etc.. The Heritage centre museum is well worth a visit.

Richmond has castle, Green Howards Museum and market on Fridays, several sites nearby.

I like Demesme and Bellingham too. The bakery is brilliant and the wee Co-op very well stocked plus a great base for exploring around Kielder and parts of the Wall. Garage fuel prices are high but its owner is very kind lady and has opened up on request in an emergency. Last visit, 2019) she had plenty of camping essentials in stock - yes, I'd omitted to put in the pegs for the guys for my radio mast - doh! Pubs meals are very good too.
