Because they lose money, the site I used to help out on a few years ago used to let people book in advance free of charge, this soon changed when people just didn't turn up and cost the site money through lost bookings.
During the Pandemic they again reversed this as it was costing them far too much in admin to keep returning deposits or moving bookings so have decided to not do advanced bookings until things settle down, I assume this cost them as in July last year they were booked up until August this year and have constantly been refunding deposits falling in the lock down period on those bookings.
I certainly wouldn't want to be a site owner/operator at the moment. In normal times though, if I were I would definitely charge a deposit. If people don't turn up (Covid and similar circumstances excepted) they would lose their deposit.

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
There's a really nice site up here in North Norfolk, they don't take bookings. If we meet with friends from away there we ring and ask if they are busy before we travel. I assumed they don't take bookings because it would need administrating.
------------- Just saying
If all is not lost where is it then?

Strange isn't it. Before this topic came up recently I didn't realise there were any sites that didn't take bookings, I just assumed they all did. We only ever book fairly last minute, but I always book as I wouldn't want to drive some distance then find that I couldn't get on a site where I wanted to go, especially towing a caravan. I got caught out with my very first holiday in married life when we went to Southwold with a borrowed campervan and couldn't find a site that would take us. We ended up spending the night on a building site!
I am confused, when is a booking not a booking, is it only a booking if money changes hand, or is a telephone call confirming yes come at the weekend we have room, a booking.
If the former then I have never booked a campsite in 40 years

In recent years I have done both. Most times recently though I've booked online and paid a deposit. In years gone by before the internet, I have phoned a site and booked without payment, but that was because it was usually just the day before and back then there was no way to pay. As far as I am concerned a booking is a booking, whether a deposit is paid or it's just a "gentleman's agreement", online or over the phone. What I have never done since that first holiday is just turned up and hoped.
Yes I agree, always clear it with the site, from now my Gentlemen's agreement will be called Gentlemen's agREEremenTS GREETS.
Booking will prepaid.
I will continue with Greeting sites, or Greeted by site
