In both cases the sites were quite easy going and did not insist in being parked in any particular way so long as your outfit fitted on your pitch and distancing was maintained but perhaps campsite owners should give a bit more thought, given the amount of new campers as a result of Covid, to make sure that campers understand exactly where their pitch starts and ends and not relying on people having 'common sense'.

And sadly when the sites do make an effort to ensure everyone pitches correctly, as in CAMC club using pitch marker/alignment posts with specific instruction as to how to locate your unit/awning/car in relation to the marker post, then they come in for some quite harsh criticism (a couple of people on this forum alone are very anti!) for being too draconian and regimented! The sites can't win!

Personally I'm in favour of the system, it leaves no room for doubt and no room to argue about how to pitch, it maintains the fire gap and personal pitch space, it doesn't stop you being nose or tail in to match your habitation door/awning side, it just works in everybody's favour, it's unobtrusive and simple to understand. As to leading to too regimented a site layout, it's no worse than a van wide hard standing/adjacent grass awning space for forcing your positioning, and I know CAMC sites that have a very higgledy piggaldy visual layout that use the posts to ensure correct positioning without causing regimented rows.

It seems that the days of common sense being the norm have long gone, control and instruction are necessary to counter chaos.
