Anyone been to Shetland? I must admit that I've become intrigued after reading a number of Ann Cleeves novels. It might be the nearest I get to travel abroad this year, but I'm wondering if there's much to do. Not interested in night life etc., but like culture, museums etc..
Any ideas would be welcomed.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Shetland is quite honestly awesome. We spent nearly 3 weeks pottering around. Loads to see and do, each island a bit different. Unst was our favourite, amazing beaches and cliff walks out towards views of Muckle Flugga.
lighthouse and the famous,furnished, Bobby's Bustop😁.
Lots of good campsites as well as most communities running a camperstop (for caravans and motorhomes) at the local village halls, which include electric hookups, showers and loos.
Highlight of course being Jimmy Perez's house by the sea 😃
Rather than the 12 hours from Aberdeen sailing, we did the crossing to Orkney for a week first. The Aberdeen ferry calls in just before midnight every few nights so it's only a 6 - 7 hours crossing.
Orkney and Shetland are like chalk and cheese - well worth combining the two.
Thanks Dot P. The prices of Northlink from Aberdeen are a tad eye-watering! As an alternative, I was looking at possibly driving to Scrabster and going to Orkney. That's not too expensive, but for a short break in Shetland I might find it cheaper to fly and stay in a B&B.
I'll have to persuade the boss. She loves the books, but is worried that it would be a bit bleak.

I wouldn't say bleak, lots of cliffs and lochs as you would expect but if you catch good weather some amazing beaches and great walking too.
Lerwick itself has a good selection of shops, bars etc. There were plenty of cruise ships when we went which adds to the holiday feel.
Tell the boss lady that she could go to a 'Shetland Sunday Tea' which she will know from the books! a very Shetland institution where the whole area gathers for a massive feast Sunday afternoon and visitors are equally welcome.
We met several people who told us they had flown in, hired cars, b&b and still not spent the cost of a ferry from Aberdeen so you may be right on that option for a short break.

Cheaper to sail from Gills Bay Captain. (Privately owned/operated ferry and not subsidised).

I agree, Pentland Ferry from Gills Bay to St. Margaret's Hope on South Ronaldsay then the spectacular drive over the Churchill Barriers up to Orkney Mainland.
That's the route that most of the locals use.
