I am trying to identify a camp site which as far as I can remember is in the southern area of the lake district. The main thing that comes to mind is that to access the site you had to go over an extremely narrow bridge. Any help here would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Sue.

That's a pretty thin description and in all likelihood doesn't narrow down the possibilities too much to stand a chance of giving a reliable answer! The region is spoilt for choice on narrow bridges, and camp sites in some form are not that much of a rarity either!

Be useful to know which direction you were travelling from and where from to narrow down the road choices a little.
Were you in a MH, caravan or tent?
Was it a large Caravan/MH/Tent campsite, or a tiny tent only site etc.?

One site I know well is the Caravan Club (CAMC) site midway along western side of Coniston Water, it's called Coniston Park Coppice. If you approach from the north on the A493 you will go across a narrow humpback bridge on a sharp left turn near Clappersgate just SW of Ambleside, campsite is about 10 miles after bridge. There are also around 20 odd other sites in the area that you would use that bridge to access if coming from the north. It's a pig of a bridge in a solo car (you lose sight of the road/other cars and sharp left hand turn on bridge exit!), I wouldn't dream of trying to cross towing my caravan or driving a large MH! (Google streetview: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/ at 54.4264749,-2.9689494,3a,75y,315.9h,90.57t/data=!3m........ )

Another site I know is Baysbrown Farm at Chapple Stile on the B5343, tents and small Campervans only due to the narrow/steep humpback bridge and sharp RH corner on the site's private access road!

Try using the UKCampsite site search feature to bring up campsites in the region, it might jog a memory for you, and assist us in identifying your mystery site.

Good luck.

Hi Monti thank you for your reply.
I was travelling in a large motorhome at the time. I think heading back from Windermere heading for the A65. It was a long level bridge and very narrow. The site I stayed on was in woodland and red squirrels were in evidence in the woods. Hope that helps, unfortunately it was probably fifteen years ago so can't remember any more. I was with my wife Sue who passed away eighteen months ago and I am now trying to go over some of the ground we covered together. 444 Sue was her car registration number, this is now on my California.

As a Londoner with a passion for the 'Lakes' only surpassed by the love of my dog, I'll rack my ancient and drink sozzled brain to assist you, with the hope that nearly 50 years of visiting the 'Lakes' can help you. In your circumstance, it's important to make the effort.

Let me have a little think about it.

Come on folks, give me a hand here!

Sounds like Haverigg, near Millom
Possibly Harbour lights campsite going over a narrow bridge over the old sea wall.

By coincidence, I've been sorting some old (30+ years) photos and found one of Mrs. L feeding geese at the back of our van.
I remember this site because it was located behind a tall fence and bolted gate. On entering, we found it was a sort of bird sanctuary. Beside it was a small photographic museum (mostly about Henry Fox Talbot) and also a small car museum.

I just can't remember where this was and it may not even exist today. Maybe I should have written on the back of the photos. (come to think of this - I used to contribute regularly to MMM and this was published in one issue. I wonder if I kept the article - after 30 years and moving house - I doubt it)

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
