I've just received a notice that the Hertford club site (and others) are closing because of staff shortages. Does anyone know any more?

Hope this isn't permanent as it's one of my favourite sites.

I have no particular knowledge of the site(s) you mention but I have heard that both clubs are struggling with having enough staff. Whether this is to do with people deciding not to carry on due to COVID or the way they were treated during COVID who knows?

It’s on the CCC website. It’s down to staff shortages.
“This means we have taken the difficult decision to close a small number of our Club Sites and Ready Camps, and we have contacted any members and customers affected. The following campsites will be closed until next year: Bala, Clent Hills, Kelvedon Hatch, Lauder, Sheriff Hutton, Slindon and Speyside.
Hertford and Theobalds Park are also closed and will both reopen from 1st November 2021.”
It’s a bit of a mystery as friends stayed at Lauder only recently & Speyside was letting me check availability. There’ll be a logical explanation though.

-------------
2024 = 20 sites / 41 nights. 2023 = 9/23. 2022 = 13/35. 2021 = 11/29. 2020 = 4/20. 2019 = 13/35. 2018 = 20/33. 2017 = 10/22. 2016 = 19/33. 2015 = 15 sites / 27 nights. Didn't count 1976 to 2014.

Hertford is my local site just 10 minutes drive from home, and I hadn't heard about this despite being a C&CC member. However, we have just got back from Ringwood in Hampshire, our first time away since September 2019. (Site review submitted). Hertford is a lovely site, shame that this has had to happen.

At the moment there are over 51,000 new infections a day. If the NHS App pings everyone they have been in close contact with and advises them to self isolate, there are going to be hundreds of thousands of people unable to go to work and there will be staff shortages and closures in all businesses, not just campsites.

My husband and I were talking about this earlier today. If there are 50 odd thousand new cases a day and each of those 50 thousand have an average of 6 contacts, that means that every day, at least 300 thousand people will be told to self isolate. It won’t be long before we are back in a kind of lockdown, not because we have to lockdown but simply because so many people will be self isolating that there won’t be anyone left to keep anything open!

There is an irony to all this. The more restrictions are relaxed when infection rates are going up, the more infections will rocket, the more people will get "pinged", causing more businesses to have to close due to staff shortages. Relaxing things too fast when infection rates are rising could end up causing far more problems for businesses than lock-down.

Yes, we're regular visitors for Hertford, were due to be there for the food festival (we've stayed for the town music festival in previous years). There's lots of space for tents without EHU, it's lovely.

It is a lovely site, I quite agree. We would go there a lot more if it weren't just 10 minutes up the road. We have visited a few times though, once to check out a new-to-us caravan and awning, and a few times with our local DA. Even when the site is fully booked there is still loads of empty space, and not all the pitches are in neat rows either side of a roadway. Some are scattered about at random in among bushes and trees, so you can pitch any way round you like. Just how we like a site to be.

That's why a lot of people are deleting the app from their mobiles.

I can fully understand why people might delete the app, there are bound to be many false alarms. However, the fact that people are getting pinged proves that the app is working as designed. In all probability deleting the app will lead to an even greater number of infections, so in the longer term deleting it could lead to a greater risk of the virus mutating again. Possibly to a more vaccine resistant strain.

I think the only Covid policy left now is the washing of hands. Government's doing a lot of that now.
