Any recommendations for sites near picturesque rivers for walking along? not too far away from Luton.

Not CL/CS but two sites I know of around this way are the C&CC site at Hertford which is not too far from the River Lea, and the Lea Valley site near Dobbs Weir. Hertford site is lovely, but I don't know what the Lea Valley one is like to stay on as I haven't been on it for close to 40 years. I often drive past it though as its only about 10 minutes from home, as is the Hertford one in the opposite direction. If you like lakes and rivers you'll love Dobbs Weir, as I call that area "Hertfordshire's Lake District". Don't tell everyone though as we'll have the place full of tourists and it's lovely and peaceful as it is.

Very different down here as it's a navigable river/canal from Hertford to London. There are some beautiful lakes around this way though, probably former gravel-pits but all landscaped many years ago so very natural looking. All part of the Lea Valley Park. The Lea towpath can be walked all the way to the east end of London and its a different world to the one you would see by road. Down by Waltham Abbey alongside the river there is the Olympic white-water centre if you fancy trying that. I didn't so I just sat and had a coffee and watched instead.

I have often found that there is much to see on our own doorsteps, but if you are anything like me, you rarely do. I only found those lakes by going out with a local walking group.

Thanks, lots of good walks around here. We have Barton Hills, Sundon Country Park, Sundon Pits, Houghton Regis Chalk Pits, Sharpenhoe Clappers, just for starters. We have often been away and can't find anything so good.

Not near rivers but well worth a look. Houghton Regis Chalk Pits is lovely, lots of butterflies, and a lake which our Harry loved to swim in when he was young.

How about the Hone Farm CL in Stoke Bruern, South Northamptonshire. It’s right on the Grand Union canal, just outside the very picturesque village. No hookup, two pubs and a very good Indian in walking distance.

This might be a bit far for you and I can’t recommend it from personal experience but it is on our ‘to visit’ list having been highly recommended to us. The site is called Swanley House and is just outside Nantwich in Cheshire, right on the Shropshire Union Canal. I think it is a CL rather than a CS.
