Hello, im wanting to get into camping, but not with a tent, I have been looking at small teardrop style caravans, but the prices seem way overpriced, I have been looking at box trailers, fitting windows, extractor fans, plus campervan unit pods. Solor power & campsite hook up lead to power things like kettle hair dryer etc
But im unsure if any campsites would allow this kind of thing on site?

You would probably need an IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) for a light trailer to make it legal and for insurance compliance reasons. Below is a link that may help to determine what is required.
The issue I would have is rear lights not being seen when rear doors are open.
If I could get around this issue & pass the IVA, would it be able to use campsites/caravan sites? I guess on arrival they would ask for a IVA certificate?

Thank you tango55.

You're never going to have the doors open whilst it's being towed so not a problem. I'm not even convinced you'd need this certificate at all as the base of your conversion is already a box trailer.
And I can't see any problems being accepted on campsites, and certainly noone ever asking for an IVA certificate!
Good luck!

Some horse trailers look like they’d convert nicely. The ramp might make an outdoor space, very Gorgeous George Clark.
(Query - extractor fan? Never seen that as a priority for a conversion. We’ve never used ours. But at 0200 when it’s pouring with rain, you might wish you’d fitted in a toilet.)
It sounds like a satisfying project, good luck!
would you be insulating the walls, and lining the interior? sounds a very interesting project, and without a wooden frame, it would'nt suffer from water ingress, like so many of our caravans. interior lining could be plastic.
please keep us updated on this.
i've never heard of anyone with a home made trailer, having a iva
I know of two people that have converted box trailers into a living pod, but generally they only go to car shows, so don't have problems.
Both have fitted small windows and a roof hatch/window. One basically used the interior plans for one of the bigger teardrops, the other used the fitting ideas from one of the small singke person van conversions.
There are occasionally a few on Ebay.

As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Trailers & caravans are not registered or MoTeed so they only have to be roadworthy with compliant lighting & so on. As for acceptance on campsites a few have rules but the vast majority I have been to accept anything. Read the small print on the campsite website you want to visit. Some have rules about camping units but most don’t.
We have been on a site where there was a horse box lorry. The front half was converted for living and had child's pony in the rear. Went of site each day and came back each evening.
