Got plans to go in late March, stay approx. 4 weeks. Not going to book a return, will just play it by ear. Anyone been? Any must dos and must don'ts? Campsites all seem to based on car parks, which is ok but not good for an awning. Any suggestions for a campsite, got plans to do a one stop stay, maybe two stops. Dunno if we are going via Aberdeen or thru the Orkneys, will have to make our mind up soon. Any thoughts, comments? Any tips? Any must do's?

Can't think of any sites we stayed on where you could put out an awning, everything hard standing.
Inter island travel was easy and fairly cheap, each one different but Unst was our favourite - Bobbies bus stop and walks on the cliffs overlooking Muckle Flugga lighthouse were both worth the ferries as was the actual drive.
We went via Orkney, Shetland ferry from Aberdeen arrives /departs Orkney around 11pm and arrives Shetland about 7-8am. On the way back it's a late arrival around midnight on Orkney.
So much to see and do on every island, one of our best trips anywhere in Europe.
If you like walking, views and a fair amount of windy days you will love it.
Check out the excellent VisitScotland website. Loads of well illustrated information under a number of helpful themes. The ferry companies may have videos too.
We’ve not visited, sadly - should have called in between Iceland & Orkney but the waves were too big at 6m. Dot P is correct about windy days!
Thanks for the answers, still not made up which way we travel to the Shetlands, if we go via the Orkneys we like to make it another destination rather than a transit stop. Should have mentioned we are pulling a caravan. We can,t go until after the 15th of this month due to the caravan being serviced. Any more info, opinions is appreciated.

Google "towing a caravan on Shetland", plenty of specific info comes up and there's even a FB group https://www.facebook.com/Shetlandcaravanclub/ (I'm not on FB, so I can't say more than that).
Check the ferry fares soon. The prices may help you decide whether or not to go via Orkney.
Strictly speaking, it's "The Shetland islands" and "The Orkney islands".
I've often fancied visiting Shetland - maybe I've been watching too many "Shetland" stories on TV. The obvious route for me might be from Aberdeen to Lerwick, but it's a long, expensive overnight journey using Northlink ferries. I could head right to the north and take two shorter journeys, maybe stopping over on Orkney.
However, I think I might go for a 'taster' by flying from Aberdeen and stay in a B&B.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

Very true. But it’s marketed increasingly as Shetland (single) eg www.Shetland.org. Not “the Shetlands” or Shetlands (plural), I agree. However, as long as people visit, that has to be good.
Fiona, I expect that the TV series has been a good advertisement for Shetland (Mainland) and maybe even some of the smaller islands.
I was initially shocked at the cost of the Northlink ferry (2 + campervan) from Aberdeen as it was comparable with the cost of Newcastle or Hull to the Netherlands. However both the distance and duration of the trips are similar.
Did you see, some years ago, a programme about the large cruise ships that visited Shetland. Some of the passengers seemed to have no idea where they were. One lady asked if she could get a bus to Edindurgh and was incredulous to find that it was 300 miles away. Another one thought she was in Dublin.

Ferry prices - agreed; that’s why I suggested the OP checked the various routes soon. With a caravan, they might be in for a shock.
I’ve had some bizarre conversations with people on cruise ships but the cruise lines don’t help - an excursion from Invergorden to Loch Ness? I think they met themselves coming back.
If you have a dog be aware that travelling from Aberdeen means putting your dog in kennels for the overnight crossing unless you're fortunate enough to book one of the few pet-friendly cabins
