I`m a seasoned camper but have never been camping with a dog before. Going to take my very well behaved and friendly 3 year old Cockapoo for his first trip. Just for the weekend.

I live in Tamworth so thinking I don`t really want to travel more than 2 hours or so just in case he really doesn`t like it !

I`ve camped at Pillaton Hall Farm about 10 years ago and thought that would be ideal as it`s close to Cannock Chase and you can walk into Penkridge and have a couple of pints in the dog friendly pubs. However just looked at their website and it looks like they`ve gone more commercial and have lots more facilities. Not a bad thing in itself but their prices have rocketed. I`m not paying £35 per night for me and the mutt !

Any suggestions ?

Not that bothered about lots of facilities to be honest. As long as it`s near somewhere I can exercise the dog and then on the evening we can walk to a town/village for a couple of pints.

Cheers

Dunston Heath Farm? also near Penkridge but not sure if it's in easy walking distance. Certainly a lot cheaper than £35. Or what about a site at a pub? I'm sure there will be plenty of suggestions.

Kingsbury Water Park C&CC site is very good. Dogs allowed and miles of walking in the adjacent park straight from the site. The staff are really great.

You can walk to Kingsbury Village( shops and pubs)or to the nearby Birmingham and Fazely Canal. I can recommend the Dog and Doublet pub on the canalside.
Dog friendly and very good food.
A bit further is Wolverley C&CC site, again by a canal and good pub. Plenty of walks on towpath or in field by the site.

I'd say perhaps the majority of sites are dog friendly, but that does seem to bring a problem in that so many people these days seem to knowingly disobey site rules which ALWAYS insist you keep your dog on lead/restrained, but they let theirs run free!
I've got a dog, and she's good natured, and happy to ignore other dogs at a reasonable distance, BUT really not keen on strange dogs running up to her too fast/too close, so it has been a problem on sites. They also tend to wee/poo on your pitch when they go walkabout, which can encourage your dog to go where you rather it didn't!

As to first time camping, mine was about 18 months old on her first trip, and took to it like a duck to water, no problems at all, considering it was a dog owners rally with about 40 other dogs, it could have been a disaster with endless barking, but was brilliant. By the way, tents are rarely dog proof! - they will find a way out, including opening zips on door flaps! Now a seasoned camper, and never been a problem, beyond demonstrating there are many ways out of a tent if you're a smart, cunning Border Collie! Dog crate and/or ground anchor are worthwhile camping equipment IMHO/experience!

Sadly £35/night and considerably more, is not that uncommon these days! Not a figure I'd pay, but becoming more difficult to avoid it seems, there are thankfully still plenty of sites with more realistic fees.

Can't specifically help with your site, but use the Camp Site Search facility, set the filters for 'dog' and 'bar' etc. to whittle down the list to appropriate sites.

We had a “Houdini hound”: our second dog could wriggle out of the tent but she was the perfect hot water bottle at night. The first dog hated being in the tent & therefore slept in the car.

We had a rescue dog from a pup just before we got our first van in 81.(75 Monza 12 ft) Our first outing was to Bala during a cold Easter. The pup loved it and had her first swim in the lake, being a lab cross had an attraction to water!
After that she loved going away in the van as it meant lots of walks.
She would lie outside on her long lead all day when not walking.

We never left her off her lead as she was very friendly and would go and say hello to people. Cats rabbits and squirrels would be exercised too!
She was happy in the awning off her lead with us.
She slept in the van on her bed initially but would come and join us! Luckily she was a smallish dog.

I did think of this but I only live about 4 miles away from here and it`s one of his regular walks - Kingsbury water park is a fantastic place. A bit too close to home to be honest. Does look a really nice site and certainly fits my criteria ! Good call

Not been yet but we're visiting Kings Orchard marina site at Huddleston with our 2 dogs in June. The reviews on here are very good and they have an area for tents as well as pitches for caravans and motorhomes etc. The reviews also recommend the Plough pub 5 mins walk along the towpath.

Well ended up at Lickhill Manor Caravan Park

What a great campsite. The location is superb. It`s a really easy 15 minute walk into Stourport On Severn along a good path next to the river. Lots of rowing boats and pleasure craft to watch. Stourport has a large number of decent pubs, a funfair and a cracking brewery. It surprised me how good Stourport was.

In the opposite direction along the River Severn is Bewdley. It took me and the dog about 45 minutes to get there. A really really nice scenic walk. If you don`t fancy walking back from Bewdley (it was exceptionally hot on the Saturday afternoon) you can get a bus from Bewdley to Stourport and it`s only £2. Bargain.

There is a huge field by the river specifically aimed at exercising your dog which I used on a few occasions. Poo bins were plentiful around the site.

Grass was cut short and the whole place was very well maintained. I didn`t know you cant take dogs in the toilets / wash area`s (schoolboy error !) so can`t really comment on them but they looked good peeking through the door !

Would I stop here again ? Yes definitely. Recommended

Lots of threads about dogs, some sites limit on numbers & how much you’ll be charged at some sites.
Might be too far for you, but the website for Silvercraigs at Kirkcudbright specifically does not limit numbers per pitch but of course they’ve got to be on a lead on site (and there are red squirrels in the woods next door); no charge. Dunroamin near Newton Stewart hosts agility dog clubs.
If you use the Search facility, you’ll find the recent threads. Or just do some scrolling.
