I think it's a bit like comparing a stay at a Premier Inn and a hotel with entertainment, swimming pools, bars etc. Both hotels but offering different things that different people want.

Haven is a holiday park that offers camping I can't see it compares with a pitch on a regular campsite in any way. The number of staff employed at Haven compared to a couple of underpaid wardens at either club has no comparison hence how can costs be compared?

I don't think it's always about money, plenty of people can afford a holiday park but have no interest in staying on one, that's all good

It makes me laugh when people who would never even want to stay at Haven and the like are affronted by their prices.

Yes I can see what you mean, but on a touring park you are only really renting a patch of ground, whatever else the park has to offer.

I must admit I am now one of those you refer to who would never want to stay on such a park these days, although I have done in the past when our kids were young, albeit in a static caravan which is quite a different matter.

Actually I was only commenting on something someone else brought up, as I would never even look at such a site or their prices, because I wouldn't want to stay on one now that I am long since retired and even several of my grandchildren are adults.

There's a term for this kind of thing, price gouging! Price gouging occurs when a seller increases the prices of goods, services, or commodities to a level much higher than is considered reasonable or fair (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_gouging).

In my opinion, the best thing to do is to call them out and avoid them. They won't get rich quick with a fall off in demand.

I don't think there is much likelihood of a fall off in demand any time soon as there are many more taking up the pastime. While people are prepared to pay crazy prices, there will always be sites prepared to charge them, and there doesn't appear to be any shortage of people prepared to pay them.

We visited Dorset on our tour in June, and had booked months in advance a place that had been recommended. The site was a little above the price that I normally pay, but there were good reviews. Unfortunately since booking, the site had introduced electric metering. No mention of this was made in the frequent reminders to pay the balance ( deposit was £50) before arrival. My husband does not carry cash and I only had 2£1 coins, the showers also needed coins(but we prefer to use own facilities anyway). So I fed the meter late evening, and then got woken up 5am by the fridge beeping cos no power.
During our stay despite trying to gauge usage, I was woken very early every morning by the fridge! no lie in for me. We weren't the only ones not informed of the change, and it did dampen our experience. Would not return.

Which site was this? I'm often down that way and I would like to make sure I avoid it. Did you leave a review on here?

Some sites are now introducing an electricity allowance. One we stayed at in Scotland gave a generous 20 units, another 10 units which was more than enough. It's not on not to inform you in advance about the metered ehu.

I go to a conference every year along with about 4000 other people and therefore, accommodation in the town is at a premium during the conference. We could stay further away and drive in each day but then parking is a nightmare so we reluctantly stay at the C&CC site which is within walking distance of the venue at £47.50 a night for 2 adults with EHU. I dread to think what it cost the family on the pitch opposite us this year with 3 adults and 3 children. There is nothing special about this site, I have stayed on many far better sites at half the price, but this site can charge what it wants during the conference due to the high demand and its location near the venue. You need to book a year in advance to get a pitch during the conference.

Metered electricity should be considerably cheaper than non-metered. Sites are not allowed to re-sell electricity for more than they paid for it, which is why so many sites did away with their meters and went over to charging a fixed supplement for an "electric pitch". That way they can charge whatever they like.

A site we went on in Somerset back in 2019 had metered electricity. You paid on arrival for an electricity card the size of a credit card. When you got on your pitch you put the card into the meter and it downloaded whatever you had loaded onto the card. At the end of your stay you put the card back in the meter, pressed a button, and the meter downloaded any unused credit back onto the card, which you then took to the site office for a refund. Admittedly we only had a fridge, battery charger, and kettle running on EHU, but we paid just £2.80 for an entire two week stay. A bit different to the usual £3 to £6 a night non-metered sites usually charge.

Colin
