Good morning. I’m now a lone camper ( long story !) but with a family sized 4 person air beam tent - Zempire EVO TM V2. Looking for experiences/suggested campsites for air tent use in Mull/Skye/Outer Hebrides, all of which tend to be a bit windy !

I think Tobermory campsite is probably the most sheltered on Mull. Although I've used a 4 man airbeam at Fidden Farm (right next to the sea) and, while is was a bit gusty at times, it was fine.

Not quite Skye but the Ardelve site just off the Kyle of Lochalsh road was fine in an airbeam too.

Last August, we had 7 nights at the Sheiling Campsite with our Airgo tent. We were not subjected to any high winds during the week and we had a great time. Note that the tent pitches are on a form of Astroturf and you need rock pegs.


In September 2019, we did a Hebrideian Hopscotch from Tiree to Barra and then Uist and Harris/Lewis for 19 nights. In effect we only camped for about 6 of them due to the high winds and rain. Our tent stood firm and dry in weather which on occasions changed direction 180 degrees.
It was just that we couldn't sleep due to the noise.

This is when we miss ficklejade, who could advise on Mull as a resident & a camper. RIP. But keep to the east coast, if in doubt (but then you miss the sunsets…)
As a west coast resident, I’d say the Outer Hebrides have little topographic shelter from the predominant SW wind, which is why you travel from south to north with the wind at your back.
Skye - read the site reviews. I’m not going there soon, not because of the wind but because of the numbers at the beauty spots.
Rather than worry about the wind, trust your kit & maybe upgrade your tent pegs.

I do remember - admittedly about 20 years ago, so I can't remember the names of the sites! - having to move my car round a few times to find some sort of shelter from the worst of the wind on Skye; that was in a small dome tent with relatively little wind resistance. I camped near Portree and near Staffin. Extra guys/pegs (and parking backside to the prevailing wind,of course)could well be very helpful for a larger tent.
