Hi

I want to stay at a caravan park as close as possible to Whitby. I've read all the reviews and we stayed at Whitby Holiday Park last year which was amazing. Of course, it's on a cliff and, as much as the weather was good, it was super windy all the time (which I expected and took the right stuff with me). The only problem with this is it made my eyes water all the time. Is there a caravan park around Whitby where I might be able to find a slightly more sheltered pitch? I want somewhere where I can walk into Whitby.

I am looking at Lythe Caravan Park or Broadings Farm. I am also considering Serenity Touring Park up towards Staithes too. If anyone has any personal experience of staying at any of these sites, I'd be grateful if you could let me know if any of them have any slightly more sheltered pitches.

I'd welcome any other suggestions also. We need to have toilet and shower facilities and electric hookup. No metered showers as they just annoy me (it's the faffing around with coins or tokens). I don't mind hardstanding or grass. Sloping pitches fine too.

Yes, before anyone says, I know it's a coastal area and I know it will get windy. It's just that there might be a site with a bit of hedge screening or something so I can sit out without my eyes streaming.

Thanks in anticipation of any ideas.

Sandfield house or high straggleton farm are walkable to Whitby.
Check reviews for straggleton farm so you will know what it is like.

Serenityand lythe are both small / quiet sites but quite a way from Whitby.

Sandfield House and High Straggleton Farm are going to be pretty exposed where they are though aren't they?

The size of the site isn't something I'm bothered about. I just want somewhere that might offer a little shelter from the wind.

The Site Search shows 14 sites with those facilities within 5 miles (I’m assuming you’re in a caravan or MH as you don’t mind a slope). Each entry in the directory has a satellite image so you can check for surrounding trees or hedges. Or look at Google maps.
Whether the showers are “metered” or not, you’d have to phone the site. The EHU might be metered too.

Not sure if you have looked through the offerings on the Camp Site Search Facility.

this is the only other one within walking distance, and with toilets and showers and ehu and sheltered, although its very expensive! i guess that saves you on parking fees?

Haven’t stayed at Sandfield House but High Straggleton Farm is one of our favourites. Derek the farmer is by far one of the nicest site owners we have ever met & his team are amazing, setting up caravans, siting them, levelling them etc. it is more elevated than Sandfield & for the location & views, it takes some beating but when it’s windy, it’s very windy with very little protection. We stay every year for about 12/14 nights but rarely put the awning up for that very reason.

Nor did we but it will depend on the weather whenever you are near the coast. The site is on the side of a hill overlooking the sea so a splendid position.

Some years ago we had a pitch on what is mainly a seasonal site just behind a school at the top of the hill overlooking Whitby. Sorry, but I can't remember its name, but you might be able to find it on Google maps. OK showers etc, but no other facilities. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but the location suited us as all we had to do was cross the road and then take the path down to the harbour. It had good access to the old railway track for dog walking too.

Freedom is a light caravan and an open road.

I might be wrong but I think the caravan site JoannaLesley could be referring to is Airy Hill. Never stayed there so don’t have any knowledge but could be more sheltered due to its location & if you are into walking, the cinder path is very close by.

I have done all you suggest, however, nothing helps more than asking specific questions and finding out what others think. I know Whitby well having visited many times and know the location of all the caravan parks.

I have ruled out Folly Gardens and Airy Hill Cottages due to reviewd. The location of both would be ideal otherwise.

The size of a site doesn't bother me. Smaller sites tend to be quieter.

I have contacted the three sites I mentioned and asked for info on the showers. I rang and left voicemails and followed up with an email. They'll be busy now as start of the season hence me asking here.

No worries,.
