We visited this year, only a few weeks ago. Great island one we will go back to although it’s a long trek from Scotland.
We booked direct, spoke to campsite first but they advised to get ferry booked first and come back to them, they then arranged the permit. This was sent to us along with campsite confirmation. Condor ferries are the only ones who sail to the islands I think, via Portsmouth or Poole. Busy ferries as they go the Guernsey, Jersey and onto France.
Comments above about moving around the island are correct. Caravans stay on site, campervan/motor homes under 7m can move around during the day. I’d also confirm some of the roads are narrow so you do need to take care with a bigger vehicle. That said I didn’t see anyone breaking the rules or anyone being checked of those that did. My vans 6m and I was one of the bigger vehicles along with the buses and delivery vans.
We stayed at Le Palms, west of the island, great site, grass pitched with hedge divides, ehu, showers, bar and cafe/restaurant. Rural area but lovely walks, nearby beach with cafe and again a nearby village with I think a Coop or Morrisons shop.
We used the buses to get around, no8 directly outside campsite. We had two dogs as well but no extra charge for them and travelling around the island was easy. The bus station in St Helier is the place to change buses but do pay attention inside the station as the glass partitions open when buses are due, don’t make the mistake we made and stand out on the street, or you’ll miss it !!
Bikes would be great as the roads are relatively quiet and there are cycle routes all over the island using those quite lanes. Limited pavements but most drivers are cautious and give plenty of room, it was the UK reg cars that were less forgiving as they’re obviously not use to people walking on the roads.
Would recommend the island, lots of history and lovely big beaches (dogs on leads during the day).
