Hi All

In May 2024, I am planning a trip to Shetland, I have always been fascinated by the area (even before the TV programme came out), just something I always wanted to do. I now have a decent small campervan a Toyota Hiace, which can handle the journey much better, being south East UK, it will be a roadtrip!

I am looking for tips and advice, IE ferry, campsites and what to do, I have earmarked some sights, though I would like to get to the Northern UK point as well.

Any advice welcome.

I assume you know that the ferry takes a long time? Can't advise because we have only been to Orkney.

This rings a bell - try a Search because this might have been covered before.
The VisitScotland website is excellent, full of information & well presented.
And Mrs B is right - it’s a fair distance; closer to Norway than London: you probably know about the “Shetland Bus” between Shetland & Norway in the war.

I took my classic car to Shetland a few years ago the ferry was 12 hours overnight it is quite expensive and,I recommend you book a cabin to sleep in, Shetland is well worth a visit and hopefully I will get back there one day.

Cheers, just realized I had to scroll down in the search box to the bottom to click 'all forums'!

A bit of information there, I'll scroll through that, yeah I know that Shetland is about 250 miles off Aberdeen, why I have to carefully plan this trip!

The ferry from Aberdeen stops off in Orkney 3-4 nights a week. Makes it a 6-7 hour crossing rather than 12 hours.
However, its about 11pm so it's still an overnighter.

There are plenty of campsites and many village halls are Camperstops with electric, loos, showers etc.

The other islands are well worth a visit, especially Yell and Unst.

Thanks for the info , my plan is to do main island, Yell and Unst.

I'll have about 18 night, but that includes travelling to and from the south East.

I'll be a solo traveler, the return ferry I gather bank on £450-500 return.

The loo and showers at campsite is probably what I require, I have a chemical Thetford on board, but that's ideally for emergencies!

I have an electric bike, which I intend to utilize, as well.

I always wanted to go to Shetland, but the thought of doing it in my previous campervan put me off, after doing the route which now called NC500!

Not quite 24 hour daylight in May, but you do need to sleep sometime!
SSE’s controversial Viking Wind Farm is up now, 103 turbines, 155m to blade tip. Pretty much zero community benefit, according to the Shetland Times online.

Yeah, the daylight I'll have to think about at night to ensure to black that out on the van!

Just read about that wind farm, looks absolutely terrible for the landscape.
