How far in distance as well as duration are you able to do in a day please?

For example, for my own trip from Devizes, Wiltshire to Glencoe C&CC site back in 2012, I stopped near Preston at a motel as I did not plan to stop driving until gone 20:00 in the evening which would be way too late to arrive at a campsite.

My plan was to drive for about 4-5h with at least one pit stop between Devizes and Preston. In the end, it took a lot longer due to an accident en-route on M6, and I did not arrive at Preston until after midnight!

i would say a stop in cheshire would seem sensible

We’ve done that, although for us Longleat from Ayrshire was just part of a loop trip. Allow 10 hours to get there, so you’re looking to stop about 5 hours down the road. That’s south of Manchester (but the Chester suggest is good).
