Everyone's definition of 'walking distance' varies! Everyone's definition of 'town' is rather dependant on what you expect to find there!
I stayed at The Waterloo Inn, Biggin (campsite is directly behind pub), last year, and booked again for this Aug, albeit in a caravan in my case and with a mixed (caravan, MH and tents) group booking where we filled the site! They can accommodate large tents on the caravan pitches, using the grass awning space beside the Caravan/MH hardstanding, friend pitched their large tent just fine.
It's a Pub/Restaurant, and there's also a rather posh hotel/restaurant (bit pricey!) next door, open to non-guests, so that may satisfy some of your 'town' needs! In the village of Hartington, just over 2 miles away, there are grocery stores, Post Office (with cash machine), garage/fuel, pub, that would likely serve your camping shopping needs. 10-12 miles away, you've got larger towns of Ashbourne, Bakewell, Buxton. It's under 60 miles from Retford. Very dog friendly, we had about 20 odd dogs in our crowd and landlord and customers loved them.
EHU, showers/toilets, dishwashing facility etc. all included in pitch fee. It hammered down with rain during my stay, but no sign of waterlogged pitches.
If walking is your thing, footpaths direct from site, Dovedale, Tissington Trail etc. within walking distance if you're fit. Most of the Peak District is pretty accessible as fairly centrally situated
The Waterloo Inn, Biggin
