We have spent the night in a Premier Inn recently for less than that. Think of the extras you get in a Premier Inn. Lovely room, much bigger than our caravan, and a private bathroom too. Air-con, big comfortable bed, water on tap without having to lug it across a field, no toilet to empty, and electricity included. No setting up to do and no striking camp. And when we check out someone else goes in and cleans the room and the bedding goes off to the laundry.
No way I'd spend anything like that to rent a patch of grass!

Sadly even Premier Inn is now getting expensive. We used to use one when we visited Bath but now that is over £100 a night at their cheapest rate, as opposed to the camp site's nearly £40.
Just looked and 7 nights in a Premier Inn in the Lake District in July is coming out at nearly £900 for 7 nights for a non refundable room.
Nothing is cheap any more.

£62/night - no chance! I love the Lakes, not so keen on Bowness, far too touristy for my liking, so my option would be CAMC site on Coniston for about HALF that cost!
Even the private site towards south of the lake is markedly cheaper at around £49/night, and I always consider that expensive!
As to having a 6 month season - NOT in the Lakes they don't, popular throughout the year! The CAMC site on Coniston used to be open throughout the year, and I've been there in Nov and struggled to find a vacancy!

I suppose it depends where you go and when. We had to go to Devon for funeral a couple of months ago. Unexpected so no booking months in advance, just about a week. 2 nights in a Premier inn, £88 total for the two of us.
We now have one night booked at Premier Inn Stansted Airport in October. £71 for the two of us.
September last year, Premier Inn Stratford upon Avon, 2 nights, two people, total cost £157.
I think if you book last minute in summer, in a popular area, it will work out expensive, but I don't think the prices we got were at all bad.

Yes that sounds about right for 1970s. We started camping in 1970 as a couple with a tent, and all you paid for in those days was a pitch. What you put on it and how many of you there were was irrelevant. I got quite a shock when we returned to caravanning in 2013 and found sites charging per person, for dogs, for awnings, fixed priced for EHU, and for just about anything else they could think of to tack on. Glad it wasn't like that in the 1970s as we would probably never have bought a caravan in 1976 when our family started to grow.
