I just don’t like the ideas of a campsite restricted to Members Only. I have camped and caravanned in ten countries at campsites which were open to all. Equally I have toured independently in ten other countries - by car, bus and train - without any Members Only restrictions. I prefer it that way.

Well the vast majority of campsites in this country aren't Club sites, and many of them are cheaper than Club sites so I don't see a problem. Both the major Clubs are basically businesses and their business model is their decision. If you don't like their model, don't use their sites.
Although I am a member of the C&CC I don't always use their sites, I use whichever sites suit our needs best at the time. Many of the Club sites will accept non-members, but at a higher price of course, but then Club members have to pay a membership fee whether they use Club sites or not. Swings and roundabouts really.

Colin

Can't say I see the merits of that point of view, but see a whole load of disadvantages of totally avoiding the clubs, as Mrs B said, the CL/CS sites alone (members only) are often really good sites, and in some great locations where no other sites are available. Big advantage of club sites is known standards and protocols, so no nasty surprises in contrast between appealing publicity photos taken decades ago and current tired state that I've seen on some private sites, or strange/petty/profiteering rules that seem reasonable to some owners!
Having used both club and private sites, I really can't say there is any discernible difference in the users, the oft told tales (myth!) of one or other club being 'elitist or snobby' is total tosh in my years of experience, and I can't imagine my caravan, car or self would deceive anyone into thinking I should be regarded as superior to anyone else! Certainly aspects of club membership that are of no interest to me, but then no compulsion to indulge in them!
Everyone to their own, but can't see any compelling reason to actively avoid the clubs, but certainly reasons for some not to bother belonging if membership brings no benefit.

If you have never stayed at a CL then you have missed out IMO. Nobody goes about bragging "look at me, I'm a member". No noise, no screaming kids as they usually don't have play areas and they are often in lovely areas, or are useful stopovers.
We have certainly stayed on a few CSs and they were great. Suited us perfectly. We don't go for all-singing, all-dancing sites, they don't appeal to us at all. All we want is clean toilets and showers and EHU, and the quieter the better. CSs tend to have pitches where we have loads of space and are allowed to pitch however we like.
