im planning on camping at one of the sites in dawlish warren in august. not sure how long i want to stay for, or when im going.  do you think i should book a pitch or just turn up and hope for the best? its been a while since i last camped.

A lot of the campsites in dawlish can get pretty busy. Why not ring a couple let them know thge size of your tent / pitch required and ask them whether you need to book. Most campsites fit smaller tents in but not necessarily for more than a couple of nights.
