Well I live here on the Island and I'll say Appuldurcome is more family with southlands being more adult.
Appul is more sheltered with Southlands more open to the elements but Southlands is more central if you plan on a little touring.
The orchards is nice with an indoor (fee) pool and outdoor pool. Only a local social club of sorts.... yes, of sorts unless your willing to drive.
If and when you do make it to the island visit these two pubs for fantastic, quality cooked fresh food.

It's difficult to park on the seafront at ventnor and I'd advise against taking a motorhome down there. If you can park in town at the top and walk down you will not be hard done by. The food is suuuuuperb.
For fossil hunters take the military road and park at either Brook or Compton which both have NT carparks. Between these two places you'll see a pepperpot amongst a rocken outcrop.
At low water roll up your trousers and walk across the petrified forest onto what looks like a giant tilted table top. If you pay close attention to the detail under your feet you'll see dinosaur footprints. Great for the kids as they can stand in them and if you keep your eyes open on the way back you can find petrified wood, fools gold etc.
