if there is an accident  any where on that route you will be severely held up have alternatives in mind just in case, just allow plenty of time as you have a bloody long way to go.then again you could be lucky and have a trouble free run but this time of year and on a friday be prepared.im a truck driver and always plan ahead, listen to traffic updates ect.all the best

Dont think you will be too bad leaving that time, might get slowed down on the M42 by the time you get there but the traffic will be moving albeit a bit slow. Have a great time.

The A30 around Bodmin and across the Goss moor can be very slow with lots of hold ups during the Summer.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news but to get there on a friday in that amount of time your pushing your luck, you d be better off leaving a few hours earlier to aim for getting past bristol before 7 am once youve got that far pull over and have a few hrs sleep but bristol, daylight and friday are not a good combination.

Agree with Tentmad, you need to get past Bristol before the rush hour starts as it goes on all day - especially on a Friday, as everyone has the same idea of getting away for the weekend.  Go much earlier, get past Bristol, then stop off somewhere further down on the M5 for an hour or so. I used to do this route regularly as I lived in Cornwall and came home to Gloucestershire to see my family, in fact went down by train a few weeks ago to Porthleven stayed a couple of weeks then drove home overnight. I wouldn't do it during the day now. There always seems to be a queue on the A30 around Bodmin now, too.

If I were you I'd travel at night, you can always stop somewhere near your destination for a few hours until you can get onto your pitch.

Hi Stu,just returned to merseyside from cornwall,I had read on here that there were problems at Bodmin so I turned off the A30 just past Launceston onto the A395 then joined the A39 we were towing a van to Padstow and had a trouble free run.We had stayed overnight just off junction 24 and set off at  10 a.m sat morning and arrived Padstow 12.30 p.m.Newquay is also on the A39

best of luck Ken

Hi

Just been down to cornwall better of starting around 1am or 2am as it gets really busy on those roads with all the holiday makers having the same idea as to what is the best to start off.  Its a c-o-n-v-o-y but its certainly good fun.

We go on Thursday night to Perrenporth, (Tollgate farm) until the 22nd...

We will be doing the same mad one that we did last year and do the whole over night trip.  We pull an old Conway Cornish Trailer (was trailer tent is now just trailer), and we really can't go speedygonzalez at ALL. slow slow slow slow slow...

Last year set off from Blackpool at about 10am, at least 5 stops, (3 small kids + 2 big dogs) and arrived at St. Stephens at about 7am.  I have to say it was a wonderful trip, no hassle, no hold ups.. no traffic, just a breath taking sunrise as we hit Cornwall, and all the major hot spots done and dusted before most folks we evern awake.

Got the same plan for this week, can't wait.. really doing me head in having to sit here.

Everyone going south hope you all have a great time.. may write to some of you and say hello before we go.. not been on this site for a few weeks..

Chris

We left Truro last Saturday to head for Torquay and had an easy drive there starting about 9am but the traffic coming in at Bodmin was already at a standstill where the A30 goes from 2 lanes to 1, so you want to be there before that time if possible.

Our drive from Torquay to York was brilliant, not one stoppage for once, we set off at 7am, stopped once at Strensham where we got ripped off for fuel and coffee, then continued on and arrived at York at 1-15 pm.

I reguarly do the Birmingham to Newquay trip and generally agree with what most people are saying. There is ALWAYS traffic at Bristol and ALWAYS traffic at Indian Queens on the A30. 4 weeks ago I left Birmingham at 3.00pm on a Friday to go to Woolacombe...it took me 5 1/2hrs!

Personally, I've found it best to leave at about 6.00am that way I'm at Bristol by 7.15ish and Bodmin(ish) 9.00 with the traffic all going to Exeter. Coming from Blackpool as you are I'd personally leave earlier, maybe 4.30ish, you'll be there by lunchtime.

thanks for all the replies, i,ve just seen on teletext that there is a speed restriction and a contraflow on m5 at bristol, avonmouth due to roadworks up until november it must be chaotic at peak times i guess its going to be a early, early, early start.
