Hi all, we are a family of 6 looking to go camping in or near to Keswick in the Lake District. Can anyone recommend a good camp site in that area that welcomes families and has good facilities.

Chris

Castlerigg Hall, which is about a mile out of Keswick, is a great site. There isn't a childrens play area as such but there is a huge grassed area set aside where kids can play and the views of the lake are fabulous. One problem is you can't pre-book a pitch so you'll have to take your chances.

We're off the Castlerigg Hall on Saturday where we have been to before.

I am stressed to pieces that we won't be able to get on - now have 5 alternate sites. I think I'm getting a little obsessive !!

Hi folks, I am also thinking about going to Castlerigg Hall. It worries me that you can't book it, wouldn't like to get there and find no room. Are there any alternatives nearby? Whats the chances of getting on Castlerigg Hall on 20th August?

Chris - there is also Castlerigg Farm on the same road. Again you can't book though. We are hoping to get into one of them as we love the walk down to town through the woods.

Its our main camping holiday so I'm a bit concerned we can't get on but I have several back up plans !!  And because I can't get Friday off work we're going on Saturday so might be busier.

I've been trying to convince myself that most people leave sites on Saturdays, if they've been there for a week,  so their pitches will become available.

We'll just have to wait and see.

Hi

I love the camping and caravaning club site at Keswich its only 5 min walk into keswick with all its pubs, resturants, shops, cinama its right on the lake side and the views lovley, there are lots of walks to do and if you turn right as you come out of the end of the road theres a short cut to the lake where the launch is and rowing boats and park and you dont have to go through the town.

You dont have to be a member and you can book in advance.

I never book in advance. OK, I'm a backpacker who turns up on public transport (or on foot) with all my gear on my back, so if I couldn't find a site I could soon find somewhere secluded to pitch and sleep for the night. Nevertheless, I have always managed to get a pitch wherever I turn up, although I try not to arrive after midday on Saturday. To be honest, and assuming you are going for longer then one night, if I was in your shoes I would forget Saturday as the site will probably be full with weekenders who will be packing away and going home on Sunday, leaving pitches available.

I often think that non-pre-booking sites probably cause themselves more problems than they need to - what, with having to put "site full" notices up and turn people away. On the flip-side, anybody can pretend to be who they want on the phone, so I suppose having to make an on the spot decision about allocating a pitch does give the owner/warden a better opportunity to turn away undesirables, or those who they suspect might have a negative impact on the enjoyment of others.

Swings and roundabouts.

Hi Gail, I'm also going on a Saturday but I think I will take a chance. Camping and Caravaning Club sounds great though. Do you have to book in advance or can you go on the day?

Chris

Thanks for that Chorleydave - that's actually cheered me up.

We did think that even if we couldn't get a site on the Saturday we could kip in the van (we have a small combo van we use for carting our camping stuff with us) and try on the Sunday when the weekend campers had left.

Chris - I spoke to the Caravan & Camping club yesterday and they were fully booked but it wasn't for the same time as you.  There's a number on their website to call - they were very helpful..
