Anyone know of any quiet campsites that are relatively near train stations an hour or so-ish away from london. The plan is to jump the train last thing friday after work with tent and a bike, then cycle from the train station to the site.

Anyone any ideas? I'm not the most experienced cyclist so I wouldn't want to cycle more than an hour or so from the station (otherwise I'll collapse and never make it!).

I've no particular preferences for area. Just somewhere with a bit of green to wander around in.

Any suggestions much appreciated

Cheerio

Hi fabian, why not come to Oxford, cyclists weclomed with open arms here, there is a campsite just on the outskirts, I would say maybe 1/2 hour from the station, right next to Touchwoods camping shop, smashing walks along the rivers, not forgetting the colleges, great pubs, lovely resturants and cafes.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm not too bothered which station - Euston, Kings Cross and Liverpool Street are the nearest stations to where I work but it's not too far to cycle to Paddington or Victoria so it's not really a problem to go to any of them.

Cheers

Hertford C &CC site, train from Kings cross or Liverpool Street to Hertford North or East, about 40 minutes then 5 or 10 minutes cycle (uphill unfortunately) to site.

Can also walk into town for night out round the pubs and something to eat and walk back - it took us about 15 minutes to walk in, longer to walk back but that was due to the pop.

There's an excellent CC site right beside Crystal Palace National Sports Centre but I can't remember the name of the nearest station, although I do know Forest Hill's not's too far coz we pass that on the way!

The site is an absolute gem hidden away from view of the main road and you forget that you're right in the middle of busy London town coz the setting's so tranquil and countryfied! In fact, if it wasn't for the huge gr8 BBC mast at the palace itself, you would think you were out in the wilds! Really good noise reducing walls along the front edge of the site, (nowhere in view once on your camped mind you), and the road's not that busy at all once late night comes anyway. We've never had any trouble sleeping there, (tin tenters I know, but know others in tents haven't had trouble either), and we've used it quite a few times when we've been at Crystal Palace for whole weeks at a time for various springboard and highboard diving events over the years. Only non-holiday time we've spent in our caravan for gawd knows how many years......Otherwise our tin tent time's restricted to two bl**dy weeks a year!

Anyway, it's a lovely site and the facilities are spotless! You'll love seeing the squirrels wandering about too, real country like feel and a hidden gem of a place!

My name's hippy chick and I am a ukcs addict........

CC also run a campsite at Abbey Wood - open to non-members too.  It is in walking distance to the train station and the ride into central london is about 1/2 hour.  We went at Easter and plan to go back again next year.  Didn't have to use our truck at all which was good. Just got day tickets to use train and undergrounds.

The CC site at Denham is lovely. Very peaceful and only 5 minutes from the station. We regularly use it and catch the train into London. Last time i think it was only £2 all day to leave the car at the station
