Hi, has anyone been to the feeding farm for the red kites in Wales (Powys)?  If so, where did you stay, was the site good and were the red kites worth a visit?

Thank you.

Yes it is worth it, there are a few feeding stations in Powys, one near Rhayder and the other about 10 miles from Aberystwyth (towards Rhayder)

Well worth the visit as the birds are lovely - although i didnt stay on any campsites there is a nice one on the outskirts of Rhayder, but cant remeber the name.

One of them has a camp site.  I think it's the one at Rhayader but I can't remember the name.  We haven't stayed there so I don't know what it's like.  There's a red kite visitor centre there - not very big because it's on a farm, but quite interesting.

I wasn't particularly bothered about the kites when we went but my OH wanted to see them because he's interested in birds of prey.  Once I got watching them, though, it was fascinating.  Definately worth a visit.

The trailer tent group of the camping and caravanning club have a summer site at Gigrin Farm South Road Rhayder. its in the campsite listings on here and a link to their web page I just can't remember how to put the link in. It does mean there is no O2 signal.

Been to the feeding site at Gigrin Farm and it really is a site worth seeing. However, living where I do it's commonplace to see Red Kites due to a successful breeding programme a few years back.

I am well known for my contempt of the Camping and Caravanning Club, not least because I regard it as a commercial company and not a club at all. There is a Camping and Caravanning Club, but that is the part run by members for members - Temporary Holiday Sites and Rallies (the only part of the Club I was ever involved with as a member) not the part based at Greenfields House.

Nevertheless, the Camping and Caravanning "Club" gave me one of the best laughs I have ever had. I can't remember where I read it, but the "Club" merchandise included mobile phone covers. However, the logo on the covers featured the "Club" site at Rhandirmwyn, the only site in the "Club" that cannot receive mobile phone signals.

I wasn't surprised though. I expect the "professional" at Greenfields House who designed the cover had never put a foot in the countryside in their life.

Try Wyside Camping & Caravan Park, Rhayader.  Beautiful riverside spot (beware the midges in the evenings though) and a short walk through the park on the edge of the campsite to all the amenities of the town.  You can even get a cooked breakfast at nearby pub.  We stayed there in the summer, regrettably only for one night so did not have time to visit the Kite feeding farm, but on a drive along the mountain road to Aberystwith, we spotted loads of kites-absolutely amazing birds.  We shall definitely go again next year and make time for the feeding farm.

We have the occasional red kite come this way as we are about 45 mins from the red kite centre  - another facinating creature much closer to home are the dolphins on the west coast during july and august!

It's a sad week if we don't see a Red Kite from home, they have even flown below the power lines outside our house. On local farmer reckons to have 6 nests on his land, and there has always been a pair at Llanfihangel - ar - Arth. We live about 8 miles north of Carmarthen on the Lampeter road. One good place to see them is around the slaughterhouse in Llanybydder, especially on a sunday when it's quieter. Can't recommend sites in the area as I've never used any so close to home. Sorry!

I'm so jealous you see them from home!  We did go to Bassenthwaite and saw an osprey chick this year though - only interrupted by kids wanting a look and swivelling the RSPB 'fixed' telescopes out of line...we were very popular!

Whilst on wildlife theme, anyone seen otters? (see new thread)

The most beautiful of creatures. I get quite emotional just seeing them on the telly. Never seen one in the wild, though they are supposed to be in some rivers around Llandysul.

It must be a spectacular sight, and I'd like to go sometime. But you don't have to go to Wales to see one - as other posters have said on this thread - red kites are turning up all over the place - a good place is the area between Leeds and Harrogate, centred on Harewood House.

Yeah, we got so many now we are exporting them. All because some guy had the foresight to throw out some bits from a slaughterhouse, which gave a load of youngsters a head start.

As my stepson says, we have so many now we are throwing sticks at them to keep them away.
