Don't know where the witch trials were held, but the Camping and Caravan club site  at Clitheroe is aprox. 3-4 miles from Pendle Hill and you would be able to explore the area from there.

If you go up Pendle beware, we went and got totally lost in sudden mist, came down 10 miles away from our car, had to get a taxi back to it cause I was exhausted, never been back since, I'm sure Old Mother Demdyke was laughing her head off!!

There are surprisingly very few sites in the Ribble Valley / Forest of Bowland. The only two tent sites I know of around the Clitheroe area are the site already mentioned, and a very basic farm site at Newton-in-Bowland.

Incidentally, I presume you mean the area where the witches actually lived, as the trials where held in Lancaster and the executions where held in Lancaster Castle. There are tens of sites in the Lancaster area.

Clitheroe site is very close to Pendle - ideal for exploring the area.   If you can get on Rimmington is meant to be a lovely site - again ideal for exploring the area.
Stayed at Clitheroe site the other year - nice site.  During the two hours it stopped raining went for a lovely walk along the river.   Fortunately we know the area as late in laws had a static at Gisburn so headed for Burnley Indoor Market.   (It was that weekend that was the deciding factor in getting a tent with a decent sized living area.)

Seriously we love the area, and it was because Richards injury curtailed this years camping that we didn't get back.  Plenty of nice walks without have to do Pendle itself.  Did it a few years ago, only just made the Pendle in at the bottom when poured down..Sis in law and a "friend" were about 10 minutes behine Richard and me and we rather wet.

There is a witch's grave in Newchurch graveyard - if my memory serves me right it is Alice Nutter.
