We are thinking of heading off to the Lakes next July for two weeks. We have never been to this area, so are a bit 'green' as to where to stay, what to do etc.

We will be taking our two sons with us, aged 12 and 8, so we would like to turn this holiday into a bit of an adventure holiday, and do a load of activities.

Where is good to stay - nice and flat, with electric?
Where is a good area to base ourselves which offers a lot of activities?

Any help anyone could give me on this would be much appreciated,

Lynnette

You would probably want to base yourself at either Ambleside, Windermere or Keswick as these are the 3 main tourist centres of the Lakes. Ambleside and Windermere are both in South Lakes while Keswick is North Lakes which I think is Grander and more scenic.

All 3 of these small towns has a Tourist info centre where you will be able to pick up loads of info about the many activities and places to visit in the Lakes. Just about every outdoor activity going is offered but there are also some lovely tourist attractions to visit such as Wordsworths and Beatrix Potters birth places.

I would favour Keswick as my base as I love the Northern Lakes and there is a wonderful Caravan and Camping Site right on Derwentwater with its water sports and wonderful views. You are also just a short walk away from the town centre and an excellent supermarket.

Hope this helps. If you would like more info then just ask as I know the Lakes well. They are just on my doorstep.

Carol

Keswick is wonderful, you couldn't ask for a better site or setting, and there's masses to do, the boys will love it.

Hi,

we used the Campingand Caravan clubsite in August this year with our trailer tent. The staff  could not have neen more helpful pitching us on a huge pitch , very flat, with plenty room for dogs. Sadly we had a 65 mph gale which caused a bit of a problem but once again the staff all turned out and helped - we were reasonably okay - we had the attraction of an indoor swimming pool in the awning  - the dogs really liked that - and a couple of ducks and sparrows in the tent!

But  like the person above stated it was wonderful - you could do as much or as little as you wanted and it was a site we'd recommend to anyone.We\will return!!

Karin

The Keswick C&CC site can be short of pitches if the summer is a wash out, though for position near to town etc its the best. They do get flooded at short notice. Try Castlerigg Hall - lovely views, nice campers kitchen, walks. We were only allowed on the Keswick site in June one year if we could up stakes and run at short notice due to the terrible weather. A lot of the pitches were unavailable but they did not try to squeeze people in they still kept the ptich rules.
No matter where you camp there will be walks to do from the site and lovely views all round.
The tourist information centre in the Moot Hall will be able to send you lots of information and there are plenty of web sites - just type in Keswick.

Hi

Has to be Keswick for me too, we also stay on the camping and caravaning club site next to the lake as well, great place, 5 min walk into town with its cinema, swimming pool, pitch and put, bowls, crazy golf, rowing boats, the launch on the lake which you can use like a bus, getting of and walking a bit then get back on at a different stop, stunning scenery, they have an outdoor activity centre as well.

We've stayed there 5 weeks in total and never had a problem with flooding even when we've had really bad weather, so I would give it a go, but it does get booked up, as its one of the most popular sites in the CCC, so you would have to book well in advance, you dont have to be a member to book this site but if your going for 2 weeks it will work out cheaper to make yourself a member.
