We are planning on doing the fringe festival in august and were wondering on the best site to stay at.
We are CC members but are not sure how far from the action the edinburgh site is, or if we would be better a bit further out and getting a train/bus in each day.

The Edinburgh CC site is a fair distance from the centre of town however it should be easy enough to get a bus from near the site into town.
I haven't actually used the site as I live in Edinburgh but I sometimes play the golf-course which is right beside the site and from what I can see it looks pretty good.
You might want to look at the Mortonhall site which is situated on the south side of the city. Again It has a bus stop on the main road just a short walk from the site entrance. The bus will take you to the centre of town. Go to http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=2992
Anyone living or working in the Edinburgh area will tell you that the traffic situation is dire. The recent Central Edinburgh Traffic Management plan has been a complete debacle and the council is rescinding some of the changes.Parking is expensive and often difficult. It really would be best to use the busses but make sure you have lots of coin since only the correct fare is accepted.
If you're intending to visit for the Festival Fringe you really should get your pitch booked a.s.a.p.In any event here's hoping you'll have a great time.

------------- Treat the earth well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was loaned to you by your children.
That's good info from Hazel & Carr, we've used it quite often.
The CC site at Silverknowes is ideal for the city with a very good bus service right outside the gate. £2.30 gets you an unlimited day travel ticket on Lothian buses which gives you miles of travel. Excellent amenities and if I may add a pretty good site for pitching a tent.

We weere thinking of staying at the CC site and wondered is it easy to park in Edinburgh.
On-street parking in Edinburgh is restrictive but there are some large car parks which are fine - I tend to use either the Morrison Street one or Castle Terrace. Edinburgh does get very busy at Festival time though so I it might be better using the bus if possible. Driving in Edinburgh is busy at rush hour but not too bad (compared to large cities) otherwise.
Thanks for all the replies. It looks like either Edinburgh CC site, Mortonhall or Drum Mohr and get the bus in (this was the intention anyway if too far to walk). I'm favouring Drum Mohr at the minute as it looks really nice.
If you`re going to Drum Mohr, then there are regular bus services, or you can use the train station at Wallyford about ten minutes walk away which takes you to Waverly Station right in the city centre.
Drum Mohr is a lovely site...I live ten minutes from it in Museelburgh and we sometimes go and stay there for a couple of nights in the summer, just to have some effortless camping time. There`s two pubs a few minutes walk away as well (never been to either though ...one "rough" according to Hubby, one OK) and of course there`s the whole of East Lothian to the east. It`s pretty flat and there are some good cycle routes suitable even for the unfit, if you fancy a change from the Fringe and have bikes . And Camping Ecosse, our local camping emporium, is fifteen minutes away by car if you need any camping spares.
Parking in Edinburgh city centre stinks, but most of the Festival takes place within walking distance of the centre. Get a cheap day bus pass.
There is also the other CC site at Roslin which is a lovely place. You can get a bus from the village [5 mins] straight into town. we do for the tattoo.

I stopped at morton hall must be 7 or 8 years ago now when the fringe festival was on and we had to pich in an overspill field as the place was full, went out for a few hours ,came back and our tent was surrounded by snotty spotty drunk student grants average pitch distance was about 2 foot from our tent. I went to the reception and mouthed off a bit about the way they were packed in on that field and suddenly by magic a nice numbered pitch became available in the main bit. Enjoyed the rest of the stay.
So if it hasnt changed since then ensure you book in advance and ideally get them to send you the map with the pich numbers and locations on ,so you have a better choice.
I havent been back there since , I would go back though as it isnt a bad site under the right cicumstances.
