The site arranged the ferry crossing for us and therefore it was 1/3rd of the price. Read our review and decide for yourself..It really was teh best holiday in the world EVER...!

We have had about four holidays camping on the Isle of Wight and use Wightlink from Portsmouth to Fishbourne (always quite expensive though whichever way you cross!). We have also always stayed at Adgestone near Sandown/Shanklin. It is a great site with hedged off pitches and a family swimming pool. It is now owned by CCC and in my opinion the staff were all friendly but there are certainly more rules and wardens seem quite fussy over precise pitching (though that seems a CCC trait these days).
To my mionde, few holiday venues can beat the IoW for a family holiday - so much for kids and adults to do whatever the weather.

I know quite a few people who use Whitelink and use Tesco vouchers to fund the crossing so it feels as though it is 'free'.
We (six of us in a people carrier) used the Red Funnel last year and found the crossing both ways to be fairly priced although we did book months in advance. The notice at the Southampton birth make it clear they cannot guarentee last minute crossings, especially at or around bank holidays and holiday periods. The Red Funnel birth is tucked away, almost on a corner and is very easy to drive past! They obviosly have to balance upper and lower decks so you are piped aboard depending on the size of your vehicle, whether you have a trailer, whether you have luggage on the roof of your vehicle. This all means you can turn up early but be loaded last! The crossing was dead calm and not even a hint of sea-sickness was observed-you are in the Solent and not shelterred somewhat. There is food and booze to be had on the short crossing and the toilets were spotless!
We stopped in a static at north side, south has lovely beaches, will stay there next time. You really need a car to get about although the roads are similar to Bieruit and Malta - full of potholes.

Just remember that Cowes Week is the tail end of July into the first week of August...you will need to book your crossings in advance and not rely on turning up at the port on the day
