We looked at the possibility of Wi Fi on the site, it was expensive to cover the whole site (6 acres) but not too bad if we had just one transmitter at the reception, you could sit outside and use your laptop - however - the companies that install the system want us to 'sell' access time - which I'm not keen on doing.

We have compromised and put a desktop PC in our reception with internet access for the customers to use free of charge.

It is ironic, internet access in the village is via a transmitter on the top of our pub! We often get people in whose software picks up the hot-spot - but we dont have the code to gain access.

I do recall an earlier thread about wi fi on sites - I think one of the people posting had some knowledge of how to set it up easily (and cheaply!). If you are reading this let me know.

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete + Sarah

You need to create a network, whether wired or wireless. This shares your internet connection,(subject to your ISP's approval) but bear in mind that on a standard 2mb connection you would only need 30 or so users to reduce ADSL to dial up speeds.

Wireless access points can be added easily, and relatively cheaply, and can be secured with encryption allowing only "trusted" users access.

Most domestic access points have a range of about 100m, this can be increased by utilising hi-gain antennas, but really only to about 300m. This would give a range of 600m if sited centrally.

HTH

Paul

Pete, some of us are self employed running small businesses. It is the ability to keep in touch via phone and internet, that allows us the opportunity to get away in the first place.

In an ideal world, we could leave it all behind. This is not an ideal world, and compromises have to be made if we are to achieve what we want.

Ditto! Except our business revolves around the internet, so wi-fi would be a great optional extra.

Hi David

Plans for summer hols going well! You mantioned a wifi usb hub. Is this instead of a Datacard or mobile?

This is what I have purchased https://www.blueunplugged.com/Products/Blueunplugged_WiFi_802_11g_USB_Adapter.aspx

In the past I have relied on my mobile to connect to the internet but it is both costly and slow. Data cards seem expensive. I can't really report yet because I have not tried to use it in a camping envioronment. Be interesting whether we pick up a connection in France.

David

THanks David- I'd be interested in results

David,

Interesting little adapter, but it appears that it is simply giving a laptop wi-fi connectability, something which most of the latest laptops are coming with already installed.
To use it while away in the caravan, you still need to locate an 'open' wireless network within range.
However, seems a cracking price if your laptop doesn't have built in wi-fi.

David.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure!

I should have paid more attention to my Son when he told me to buy a Centrino laptop!!!! My laptop is only a year old but does not have built in connectivity. In some ways its a bit of a toy to amuse me when we are in the van. If I find a network, even if I have to pay it will be faster than my mobile. When I am abroad it would also be useful rather than using campsite computers which are usually not much faster than my mobile and I won't have to contend with funny keyboards!

I have a Linksys wireless g notebook adaptor you can have for the price of the post and packaging if you are interested David, it came bundled with my wireless router but I don't need it,my laptop is wireless enabled,it just plugs into the slot in your laptop pc card slot.
