Hello everyone,

Highfields Campsite

As any one stayed at this site as the site does not allow for reviews to be added to the campsite review section.  I am going cycling with my 10yr old son for two days in June and wondered if anyone as stayed here and what the site is like.

Cheers

Ant

Hi Ant
Not been for a while but this was a review I posted on another site:

Derbyshire

Highfields Farm Caravan & Camping Park

Fenny Bentley
Ashbourne
Derbyshire

Telephone: 08707 418000 (FAX 08707 412000)

Email:

Open: March to October                                                                No. Pitches: 105

We visited this site for a weekend in July 2003.

Driving north from Ashbourne on the A515 the site is located on the left about a mile outside of Fenny Bentley. The turn into the campsite drive from this direction needs a wide birth to avoid grounding units as it is very tight and steep.

The approach is along a good, wide drive, wooded and opening out onto one of the three main camping fields. Follow the signs to reception and park in the new arrivals spaces before walking a few yards to book in.

The staff are very friendly and make you feel immediately welcome. Booking in is efficient. You will be asked for a deposit of £5 for the key to the Toilets and Showers which is of course refundable. A member of staff will now escort you to your pitch, pointing out the facilities en route, and ensuring you are happy with the site layout. Staff frequently walk through the site and engage you in conservation relating to camping, wildlife, amenities etc etc. Everyone was keen to be of service.

Pitches are flat and spacious, numbered, many with 16amp electric hook ups. The site is open and does not have pitches segregated by hedges or fences. Some seasonal pitches are available. The toilets and showers were located in three blocks. They were clean and well serviced. Hot water is free to the taps but showers take 20p coins. Notices advise that 2 x 20p coins are placed in the meter, that you undress before placing the coins in the meter (the meters are outside of the cubicles). The site being full, resulted in these facilities being very busy at times. Located within the toilet blocks were shaving points and hair drying points.

Washing up areas were provided under cover. Cold water was freely available, but if hot water was required, a meter taking 20p, provided a sink full of hot water. The Chemical Toilet Disposal Point was clean and free from odours.

A very good indoor heated swimming pool is available for 1 hour slots and costing £1 per person. Times are posted on the door and numbers limited to about 36 per session. It is possible to hire the pool for private sessions at about £25 per hour.

For children, a playground is provided with safety surfaces, and picnic tables around the edge. Dogs on leads are allowed but not in the play areas.

The shop is well stocked with all basic needs catered for at reasonable prices. Papers are available on Sundays only.

Bike hire is available on site with all sizes and trailers. The Tissington Cycle/Walk Trail passes through the edge of the site and is easily accessable.

Other facilities include Gas; Freezer Pack freezing; Pay Phone; Excellent TV reception; Laundry Room (washer, dryer, iron).

Although the site was full, it was not noticably noisy and fell silent after 2300hrs. Children on cycles were numerous and care needed to be taken during daylight hours to avoid collisions.

Most of the Peak District attractions are easily accessable from this site with plenty to do for a weekend or longer stay. We shall certainly return.

Hope this helps. I am sure though that someone will have been more recently.

Kevin

Stayed here last September.  Visited it many times.  Toilets, etc are clean, staff friendly, but its just too busy for my liking!

Its just been taken over by another company so have no idea what improvements/changes have been made.  Sorry.

Stayed here at the beg of Sept. Good location for Tissington trail. Very clean facilities and good play area. It is a busy site, however, with lots of people seeming to have seasonal pitches. Key for the toilets a bit of an inconvenience as only one key for whole family. 20p for washing up a nuisance too. We were most irked by the fact that when you have used the pool (paying £1 per person) you are not allowed to use soap/ shampoo in the pool showers, but only to 'rinse'. This means you have to go back to the normal showers & pay out again!

The staff were friendly & welcoming but we would not hurry back

We were there last year and stayed on the big field with a group, of friends it was a bank holiday, very busy but not noisy after midnight. The facilities were clean and it is right on the Tissington trail. We didn't use the pool so can't comment.

The reason they told us for not having reviews was that there had been a few rowdy people on who they had to call the police to, those people put a review on that in their opinion did not reflect the truth.

We've booked this site for Easter, there are three families going.  It's quite expensive, and I had assumed from the information we got from the site that the swimming pool was free to use ?? !!  Looks like I've mis-read something somewhere !!  We were quite disappointed to see that there are no reviews allowed also.  I'm sure we'll have a great time, and we're looking forward to the cycling.

I stayed last year and it was excellent, pool nice and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I spoke to the owner of the site on the sunday and he seemed a really nice guy. sad if he has sold it, one thing he was against was his site having a pub etc, like a nearby site he said, so will have to revisit. I stayed in the big field, under a big beech tree. mistake!! very windy and we sisn't sleep a wink.

norrisr9 - as far as I'm aware the new owners have been refused planning permission for a pub on site.

Shen - there might be free entry to the pool now its under new management.  Its brilliant for the tissington trail tho, have a good time!

The new management have brought about the following changes:

New service road into the camping field behind the reception/shop

New wooden holiday cottage for sale at 160K plus!

Changes to the play area and to some of the machinery in the pool house

Pool is chargeable still unless you are a seasonal pitch holder.

Showers / hot water are now free

New on site catering facility.

We have a seaonal pitch there. It is terrific for the kids although it does get busy at peak times. It is very rarely noisy after 10pm / 11pm. Great for cycling and walking because the Tissington Trail runs alongside the farm. Its our home from home, we love it!!
