Guys & Gals,

I wanted to tap into your immense vat of knowledge. I'm looking for a campsite.  And I know I should probably trawl through the reviews and listings and all that but I trust you good people of UK Campsite to always come up with the goods.  Here's the deal on the second of the May bank holidays (I know - pick the busiest day of the year why don't ya' - guess we could try and be flexible on the date) myelf and a large(ish) group of friends are meeting up - maybe up to twenty in total and we're looking for a site!  Now we're nice respectable professional folks but when we haven't seen each other for a while you can tend towards being slighty noisy - you know kicking a footy around (although i frankly am getting way too old and fat for that) and few glasses of wine round the barby. As such I was looking for a site - somewhere midlands or oop north really - where we wouldnt be annoying others.  And ideally - and here's the clincher - one that lets us sit under the star lit sky, around an open fire, glass of merlot in hand and reminisce about our crazy college days all those many moons ago.

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys.  Come on I know you crazy kids can think of somewhere for me.

Cheers gang - Philto.

Hi philito, welcome to the site, we regularly go away in a group though we are caravanners and not campers, not sure about the open fires, I think you will find those a problem, but there are a lot of places that will accept groups. Some of the ones that have been a bit more free and easy are Smeetons lakes at Newark,  Rutland caravan and camping site at Greetwell, near Oakham, Highfield farm at Fenney bentley, near Ashbourne,Thorntons Holt, Stragglethorpe, Radcliffe on trent, Dirty Duck, Rutland arms, woolsthorpe by Belvoir, Fosseway farm morton in the marsh. Cottage Farm, Blackwell in the peak Derbys. All are in the campsite search and have reviews.

Hope this helps, book soon as everywhere gets full so quickly, hope you find somewhere and you have a good time.

You know what guys I'll even chuck in one myself.  I'm not sure if it makes any sense to reply to your own request but why not eh?  The Hollybush Inn (I think thats what its called) in Hay on Wye.  What can I say about that gaff.  Well crazy town, crazy campsite.  But brilliant all the same. Any town that has almost as many bookshops as people shoud be great and in my opinion it is.  Went there a couple years back during the festival weekend (which was a bit of a surprise when we got there to be honest - a pleasant one mind), long before the new licensing laws, but the pub never seemed to stop serving the finest Old Rosie Cider and don't even get me started on the birch wine which they gave us for free...how on earth do you make wine out of a tree?  Hmmm, thats possibily a whole new forum there folks.  Anyway they've a little wooded field down by the river where you can have campfires and skim stones across the Wye (and I'll admit this to you guys - I actually had to take a second there to think which river it was - hmmm, lets see which river runs through Hay-on-Wye?).  You can even hire kayaks and go paddling down the river into town.

So why not go back there you ask?  Well you should never go back.  Onwards and upwards my friends.  There's fresh adventure to be had....

The Orchard Campsite in Suffolk. You can find them if you just type "The Orchard" into the campsite search.

Just came across them myself and am hoping to go...yes you guessed it....May bank holiday week. They are happy to take large groups and one of their selling points are the open fires. Pitches are no more than £10 and the fire is £20 (although if you have a largish group this isn't much per person).

As I said havent been there yet but they seem a very friendly and easy going bunch. Just look at their advert and you'll see what I mean.

Alison

Hi Philto give the Orcharda ring UKCS have a meet there that bank holiday weekend. It depends how many units you have. But please don't ring until the weekend as I have the booking folder in my caravan which is locked up at the Orchard. Not my fault I was busy this weekend so have to go back again this weekend. OR you could registers for the meet
