I can recommend Glentrool Campsite 30 miles-ish south of Ayr. It's right on the edge of a forest park and is very peaceful with loads of good walks if you fancy. But, yes, beware the midges.
My husband is from Ayr and we visit often...how old are your children?...there is lots of countryside, walks and parks without having to go very far...large leisure pool in the city centre, bowling, cinema etc...and about half hour in car you can go to 'Louden Castle Theme Park'...which is not chock full of thrill rides but is a great day for kids...
There is a Caravan Club site in Ayr, quite a few other sites too. Never had much problem with midgies there. Keep away from tree shade and still water.

Hi try the east coast of scotland hardly any midges at all seems to be a west coast problem. some loverly areas perthshire, fife area depends how far you want to travel. easy to get to up the A1 to Edinburgh then over the Forth bridge your there.
Thanx for all your info, we live next to the beach so Brighthouse Bay not really for us but thanks for your input Jed. Loudon Castle sounds good but can you stay on a Caravan Club site in Ayr if we are not members? If not which other site could you recommend. Glentrool looks very good for us, we might give this site ago, so thank Bernie. Only one thing!, them blumin midges!!!!!! I dont want to get in me sleep bag and wake up covered in bites, and have the kids in the same way as me, not bothered about hubby as he wants to go to Scoltand, but covered in bites is not my idea of camping. We are thinking of going in August so can't really make me mind up. We love birds of prey, as we have quit a few birds our selves. We would love to see them in their world. Thanx again
We've just come back from the west coast - oban and it was great. Was on the north ledaig campsite which has excellent views and oban is only down the road. There was no midges, apparently they tend to become a problem june/july/aug months. there was plenty for the kids to do with play area and campsite is practically on the beach. they even arranged a easter egg hunt and egg&spoon races over the easter break while we were there for the kids. Well worth a visit and we will certainly go back there.

I'm also recently back from a trip to North Ledaig at Oban and I'd confirm what a previous poster has said about it. Even by Caravan Club standards it's a very good site. As it's a fairly big site there are usually plenty of kids about and the play area is pretty decent. Most (possibly all?) of the pitches have great sea views and there is a beach (although it's mostly pebbles) all along the front of the site. Oban is a short bus trip away (the bus stop is right at the site) and there are also such attractions as a rare breeds park and a sea life centre close by. Certainly one of the best sites we've used.
Another well worth considering is the excellent Hoddom Castle which is not far from Lockerbie and the M74 and therefore very easy to access from the north of England. It's a fantastic place and has plenty for the kids to do including crazy golf, pool tables etc. There is also a bar & restaraunt on site and a 9-hole golf course.
