I`ve been looking at Naburn Lock for a weekend visit. I`ve read the reviews which seem very good. I quite fancy going into York on the water bus does anyone have any info on this. ie frequency, times and cost?

If any ones been to the Blacksmith arms, is it child friendly  ?

Thanks

Travel Bug

Not sure about your specific questions but I'm going to this site for two weeks in July

Wanted a canalside Yorkshire site and this came out very well with good reviews.

Hello,

We where staying at Beechwood Grange near York 3 weeks ago and I had a drive to Naburn lock because I had ben looking at this site, it is about 1/2 mile from a samll village with a pub and shop, although the road is unlit, Take a torch, the river was flooded when we went and the bottom half of the site was un usable. I wondered why all the EHU where high up on poles - obviously because of the flooding.  there was a bus stop directly otside of the gate and the river taxi was just at the back of the site, althugh i dont know how often, albeit my leaflet sates hourly bus service... I suppose it depends on the time of year.

Have a good time, I am sure the bottom field will of dried out by now.

Shirley

Thanks for that. Going anyway. Looks a great site and I want to walk the towpath etc.

People seemed very helpful when I was asking about booking etc.

Shooun

If your going this weekend could you please ask about the Water bus. We would love to go on it but would hate it if we had to stay in York all day. I have a feeling it`s once a day there and once a day back.

Unfortunately you can't get very far along the towpath.

The site is excellent - we went there last October and are going again this September for a rally. The facilities are very good and there's a well stocked shop.

I think the canal boat goes at about 10 in the morning but the bus is about hourly. We thought about going in on the boat and coming back on the bus so we didn't have to spend all day if we didn't want to.

The pub is only a few minutes walk and does good food.  I would imagine it's child friendly but, more importantly for us, it's dog friendly. There are seats outside anyway if it's fine.

The chip van comes to the site on Saturday afternoons too.

Nora

Hi we have been to Naburn Lock a few times now and yes I think it is one trip there and one trip back. About 10 there and 4.30 back.  There is a bar on board serving tea, coffee, juice snack and off course wine etc.,  There is so much to see and do in York you will not want to come back until 4.30 anyway.  The bus run regularly but have not used it.  Get number of the bus and if you want to come home early get the bus back as you can do single trip on bus.  Anyway when you book in Catherine will give you all the info you need.

I first went there in my folding camper and forgot the key to the front locker,   they were very helpful in getting me into it, or we would have been stranded.  When we bought our first caravan a few weeks later we went straight back there and they were a god send again.  Nothing is too much trouble.

The Blacksmith Arms is very nice and yes they do except children.  The food is very good and plenty and reasonable prices.  If walking take a torch no light on road by site.

Hope all this helps and happy camping.  Anything else you need let me know.

Travel bug,

Just returned from Naburn. The water bus goes around 09:30 and sets off back at 16:30. The normal bus service is hourly from just outside the park and you can also use the park and ride services at the designer outlet and grimston bar. Hope this helps.

P.S. The site itself is just getting better and better each year...

Can someone tell me just how far the pub is from the site. Thinking of going to York in September but hubby likes pub on site, which seem to be in short supply in York.

Hi I would say the pud is a two-three minute drive and a ten minute walk.  Take torch at night no road lights.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I would agree with Kathy on the above, especially the dark walk back to the site at night (its quite eerie). Another decent site, with a pub on it is Cawood, its a little further away from York, ( I would say approx 11-12 miles).

I would thoroughly recommend Naburn Locks although at the Easter Holiday the boat wasn’t running. Local pub is great, fantastic Sunday Cavery in the beer garden.

Although the tent field had been flooded only a couple of weeks before we went, it was perfectly dry.
