We intend taking the caravan to Donegal around mid August. Does any one know how busy the sites get. Will we be able to find sites 'on spek' oh do we have to book?
Thanks

Intended to start our tour of Ireland in Donegal last August but were very very disapointed when we arrived and ended up spending the first day trying to find anywhere near a half decent site and failed! Would suggest you go further down along the South coast towards Galway as the facilities and campsites in general are of a higher standard. Yes, the sites get very busy as it is also the school summer holidays, we were lucky and found a fanstastic site, yards from the beach in Galway Bay (after having to spend the first night in B & B after a very stressful and fruitless first days search) Good Luck!
Hi Try the Downings, 2 large sites with statics, but do take Tourers etc,Its the prime weekend spot for lots of Northern Ireland families who own their own statics here.Nice beaches ,golfcourse nearby few shops .couple of bars who do food \hotels etc.Scenery quite wild and desolate in places but can be beautiful, I must admit we`ve toured most of Ireland over the last 5 years but Donegal wouldn`t entice me back as` teencham `says above Galway nicer sites etc but does get VERY busy at certain times
The first week of august (and maybe the last two or three days of July) in Dunloe there is the festival of Mary of Dunloe. It will be crowded than.
On the other hand, in the past I made this mistake and just found a place for my large tent on the campsite of Dunloe.
Love the area around Falcarragh and Dunfanaghy, but don't know any campsites there. Good chance there are one or two now as many things have changed there.
Not many sites in Donegal though.

There's a brilliant site at Crolly in Donegal which is near Bunbeg. It's very popular so you need to book at busy times. Owned by a really nice couple. This site is featured on this website thats how we found it, it's called "Sleepy Hollows".
There's another site at Rosbeg,Donegal, right on the beach really nice. Don't think it's featured on this website. It's called "Tramore camping and caravan park". If you Google it you'll find it.
Tramore at Rosbeg is lovely, but I would say that as OH comes from there, his family used to own Dawros Bay Hotel back in the 40s/50s. As others say, it would be best to book ahead for August, any other time you can just turn up. Be warned though, Irish sites are not cheap, but Tramore has views to die for.
Another vote here for Sleepy Hollow, in the middle of nowhere, quiet and well run with stunning scenery. As far as I remember they only have 3 or 4 hard standing pitches so booking would be required.

Another vote for Sleepy Hollows. We are booked there for the MayDay bank holiday weekend. Art and Pauline are wonderful owners and nothi g is ever too much effort. As it is a really small site you find everyone talks to each other.
Looking to getting there. We have 2 nights to organise yet probably round Malin Head.
Enjoy where ever you visit.
I have not stayed here but the site comes with an excellent recommendation from the site owner of Rushin House in Belcoo N. Ireland and it is a wonderful site with really clean facilities( Look at reviews under N.Ireland)
Doesn't mention prices that I can see, any idea how much? It's somewhere to consider, OH lived at Dungloe for a while too, after they had to leave Rosbeg. It has at least one bank where you can use a UK cashpoint too, unlike Ardara (nearest town to Rosbeg).
I added a post which seems to have been deleted for some reason. It was along the lines of :
If you're having trouble finding a site in Donegal maybe you could try West Fermanagh which borders South Donegal and has lots of good sites. Lough Melvin Holiday Centre is right on the border at Garrison, and also close by are Blaney Caravan Park and the excellent Rushin House.
That's strange Arthur. One time we left the caravan behind at Rosbeg and took our small tent to Fermanagh, poured down with rain. The tent stood up to it but we couldn't see any scenery.

It always rains in Fermanagh as far as I can tell. Permanently. And I'm sure the scenery is lovely but I've never managed to see any through the sheets of rain. Good pubs though!
