We have a couple of weeks holiday booked in summer, one week the end of July beg of August and the other the week before the Bank Holiday. We are still arguing as to where to go (kids fancy Skegness, we fancy York etc) and hubby thinks we should wait until nearer the time, see where the best weather is going to be, book a campsite a day or two before and then head off in that direction.

I am rather worried it won`t be that easy as we are wanting to buy a new and larger tent this year (we are very keen on the Nebraska XL) and we want EHU and I am bothered in case we can`t get in anywhere that can accomadate a tent that size at the last minute and that all the EHU`s will be gone by then. Anyone any advice? Is it possible to leave it until the last minute then find somewhere that easily in peak season? Is it advisable to book ahead and just pray we get good weather? How late do you think it`s possible to leave it before booking? Lot of questions I know but I don`t want to end up camping in the back garden because we can`t go anywhere else!

If you're looking to go during the school holidays then it's best to book ASAP in my experience (especially if you want an EHU and need a big pitch). I normally book in January for our August coastal holiday. This year due to one thing and another I left it until late February and quite a few places that I was interested in were already fully booked (and this was for no EHU!) . As none of the sites I had short-listed had room, I had to re-evaluate and we're off to a completely different part of the country!

You may of course be lucky and find a pitch last minute, and then again you could be phoning and phoning without success.

How about a week in York and a different week in Skegness?

Personally I would book in advance for holidays, as the best sites do tend to fill up quickly.

I'm organising a longish trip over July into August and I'm getting asked by some sites to "confirm as soon as possible".

August in particular seems to be the really busy month.( School holidays both in England and Scotland.)

Our lives are never organised to book pitches much in advance, unfortunately, but we have always managed to find pitches and at some brilliant sites. Do what you feel happiest with.

Common sense would say book early but last year we booked in Scarborough for August BH about 3 weeks before hand.  Didnt even ask for a deposit

book up for both places you fancy, then simply cancel one of them when you make up your mind where to go.  Typically you don't need to pay when booking a campsite or at most a small deposit which you could afford to loose

i would book now. i have just missed out on the site i wanted to stay at during whitsun and now have to start looking elsewhere. ( they still had pitches about 5 days ago but oh could not decide if he wanted to go at the time) I will be forcing he to grovel now, as i said this would happen. (nothing quite like a good i told you so!) I will now have to make him decide for our summer hols. Wish me luck.
