Has anyone been here and can give me an idea of what it is like, ie what the beach is like, what sort of place it is, is it a proper resort.( only sensible answers please) I have been to a lot of places on the east coast but never here. Is it more of a resort than Skipsea because when I visited there I was a little dissapointed, apart from the large caravan site we stayed on there was nothing there.

                                              many thanx janx

Hi

Withernsea could be loosly termed a resort. The beach is fine and there are the usual pubs / chippies / amusement arcades.

Its certainly got more to do than Skipsea.

I used to go as a kid and had some great times there. We went last year but the sea was freezing, but it doesn't seem to bother my 5 year old.

I suppose its what you make it.

Cheers

Paul

I would say that Withensea is about the same size as Filey.  You don`t say how long you`re thinking of staying ? If you get bored easy then only stay for a few days.

There`s a market at the back of the town, ample shops selling most things, including the tack shops found at most sea side towns. We went a few times for days out a couple of years ago and found it to be ok. We did notice at the time the good value prices in the slots. There`s a lighthouse, a large swimming baths. Several pubs and cafes. A long promanade, the beach looked ok.

My friend went for a weekend break in a caravan here, she wasn`t too impressed, she also said that the pubs didn`t want kids in them. She also said that it was tacky. (sorry anyone who loves it here, her words not mine)

Its a bit run down to be honest and tacky is a good word to discribe it! It has just got a blue flag for a very clean beach though so if that is what you are after fair enough Hornsea is nicer!

It's like going back in time, the highlight of the week is the Sunday Market.

The roads in are not the greatest, and they go on forever.

Stick to the more popular resorts further North.  Withernsea doesn't lead anywhere unless you want to go to Spurn. Further North at least you've got a choice.

Although saying that my boss lives there and thinks it's wonderful.

Withernsea should be had under the Trade Descriptions Act. I unfortunately used to live around that way a few years ago. I would go further up the coast around Bridlington way. The beach is more mud than sand, now covered with boulders to stop the sea washing away whats left. Queen Street is full of tacky gift shops, pubs and chippies. Altogether a tired mucky hole.

Withernsea might be tired and tacky, but when I was little my gran and grandad had a caravan on trailer park, (now a park resort, seathorne I think it might be called), there was nowt really there, but it always brings back happy memories as we used to spend every weekend and all the school holidays there. I suppose it was a case of making your own entertainment.  The coastal drive to Hornsea is pretty, very windy roads which make me feel a bit ill.  You would be only about half an hour from Hull, so the deep is worth a visit. I don't think it is a bad base to be.  The only problem in the summer is the flies on the sea front, does any one remember the flies? I remeber getting an ice-cream and it would be covered!  The other thing is the thunderstorms some of the weirdest storms I've experienced always seemed to be at With!   I've really sold this place to you, haven't I,  but I still like it for a ride out on a Sunday afternoon.  (I'll be staying there this weekend with my own kids just to chill out and entertain ourselves,  we'll be keeping out of all the amusements though)

i hated withernsea as a kid and still do. .  we were lucky our parents never subjected us to a holiday there   we had the occasional drive after sunday dinner and that was ok.

If i were you i would go to Bridlington, much better and more to see and do. Or even Hornsea, although only a small town has more to offer than Withernsea.

I can only ever remember one thing i liked at With and that was the model village.....even thats not there now. I think they moved it to Sewerby. nr Brid.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I guess it's much as I thought. I used to live near Mablethorpe and it sounds very much the same.  We usually go inland on our trips away but I do like a trip to the sea side now and again.

                                 Thanx again Janx

Withernsea has the dubious distinction of having had 3 people OD in the public toilets at once!

Visited at the weekend as it goes - its a curious and rather disturbing place, and probably only for conniseurs of dying english seaside resorts.
